Exploring the Journey of a Spiritual Abstract Artist: An Interview with Deb Chaney

Serenity by Deb Chaney 36” x 36” x 1.5”, Prints and reproductions are available at Saatchi Art.

Art has the power to transcend the visible and connect us to the unseen, evoking emotions, intuition, and deeper understanding. In this interview, we sit down with Deb Chaney, a renowned spiritual abstract artist whose work captures these ineffable elements.

Deb shares her creative process, her journey into the art world, and the challenges she’s faced along the way. Whether you're an aspiring artist or someone who appreciates the transformative power of art, Deb's story is sure to inspire.

Interview with Deb Chaney

Vanessa: After doing some research and looking at your pieces, I was wondering how you decide to represent your spiritual abstract paintings and which mediums you use to make them ready to sell?

Deb: Thank you for taking the time to research and look at my art—it means so much to me! 🙂 My favorite piece I’ve painted to date is called Serenity. An actress in Vancouver has it in her treasured collection, which makes me so happy.

I decided to represent my art as "spiritual" because the spiritual side of life—meditation, healing, intuition, angels, miracles, energy, emotions, and feelings—are things we cannot see but can sense and feel. Abstract art felt like the perfect medium to convey this, as it’s less about depicting something concrete and more about exploring the unseen.

In my paintings, I use everything from acrylics to mica flakes, pastels, pencils, spray paints, collage elements, sand, and more. Creating with all these layers is fun, challenging, and deeply engaging for me. I feel incredibly lucky to work in this mixed-media style and love the process of layering.

To finish a painting, I seal it with an isolation coat (a clear gloss layer that separates the painting from the varnish) and then apply a final varnish. If you look closely at the back of my paintings, you’ll see a small “i” with a checkmark, indicating the isolation coat is complete, and a small “v” with a checkmark, meaning it’s been varnished (two coats). I also paint the edges and sign the back to complete the piece.

Ignore Reality (48” x 48” x 1.5”), mixed media on canvas. Original and Prints available at Saatchi Art.

Vanessa: When you were in school, did you take all the opportunities in art class, and did you know at the time that you wanted to be an artist?

Deb: I attended UVIC and earned a B.Sc. in Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS). I had no idea during my studies that I would one day be an artist.

I’ve always loved the outdoors—hiking, camping, and exploring rivers, streams, oceans, and mountains—so studying geology, oceanography, and geography was fascinating and fun for me. Perhaps that’s why I enjoy incorporating sand into my paintings! 😉

In the EOS program, there were no electives, so I didn’t have the chance to take art classes. However, I do remember biking to school one day and passing a church basement filled with easels and paintings in progress. That moment spoke to me, but at the time, I didn’t realize it was a glimpse into my future.

My artistic career began much later, in my late 20s, after I graduated and moved from BC to California.

Vanessa: There must have been some bumps in the road as you discovered yourself as an artist. Can you tell me about them and how you overcame them?

Deb: Absolutely—challenges are constant and come in many forms. I’m currently reading The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday, and I wholeheartedly agree that obstacles are opportunities if we see them from the right perspective.

Being an artist is not an easy or secure career path. It’s not like medical school, where you follow a set program and become a doctor. I didn’t attend art school, but from what I’ve heard, many programs don’t teach the practical skills needed to build a career as an artist.

The first challenge was navigating the art industry and understanding how it works—learning the differences between commercial galleries, vanity galleries, and artist-run galleries, for instance. Another challenge is the entrepreneurial aspect. Selling your work means running a business, which involves pricing, marketing, organizing inventory, and shipping.

The third challenge is emotional. Sometimes you create something meaningful to you, but others may not understand or appreciate it. As an artist, you have to develop resilience and create for yourself, staying true to your vision regardless of feedback.

Vanessa: Do you think anyone can be an artist? What traits are important when starting that journey?

Deb: I believe we’re all creators at heart. Every decision we make—how we dress, decorate our spaces, or style our hair—is a creative act.

However, if you’re asking whether anyone can pursue art as a career, the answer is more complex. It requires focus, determination, resilience, and entrepreneurial skills. Not everyone is ready to take on that level of commitment.

The most important trait when starting out is clarity. Define what being an artist means to you. Success might look different for everyone—whether it’s selling your work globally or creating for personal fulfillment.

As Danielle Laporte beautifully said, “The journey has to feel the way you want the destination to feel.”

Vanessa: What would you define as art?

Deb: My definition is simple: art is something created consciously and then declared as art.

The dictionary definition resonates with me:

Art | ärt | (noun)

  1. The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

Vanessa Martin is a current student at Victor-Brodeur school on Vancouver Island and interviewed Deb for her visual arts class project. She found Deb via the Art BC website and chose to interview and feature her for her project because; “I looked at a few sites, but none of the pieces stood out to me from the one that I saw, then I found you. I believe the thing that really caught my eye with your piece was that it was so complex, and I felt as if you could notice different things within it each time you looked at it. I was intrigued and excited to reach out and interview you for this assignment.”

Can You Feel The Love In This Painting?

Love is always loving us by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

My new abstract artwork, Love is always loving us, is now available for sale. You can buy the original painting on Saatchi Art, where high-quality reproductions are also available to custom order in a range of sizes and formats.

About this painting

This captivating abstract expressionist painting immediately grabs your attention, bursting with vibrant hues. The canvas is dominated by a rich, earthy reddish-orange on the left and bright, sky blue tones on the right, punctuated by splashes of turquoise and white.

The dynamic composition features organic shapes, dripping lines, and textured elements that create a sense of depth and energy.

A title suggesting a universal and enduring theme of affection is complemented by vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes that evoke a feeling of warmth, passion, and resilience.

The paint is applied in thick, gestural strokes, creating a sense of depth and dimension. And the interplay of shapes and lines can be interpreted in various ways, from natural forms to abstract symbols, each representing a different aspect of love.

I created this painting during one of the private art lessons that I offer in my studio. It is now part of my Little Gems Series and measures 9” x 12”.

Which Of The 7 C's Does This Make You Feel?

Self Authenticity by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I’m delighted to say that my original abstract painting Self Authenticity has been sold.

While I don’t have the buyer’s details, I would like to offer my thanks and gratitude to them for choosing my artwork. I hope it makes a wonderful addition to your art collection.

And to all the other art lovers out there, even though the original painting of Self Authenticity has been purchased, you can order prints of it online through Saatchi Art. (See the bottom of the page for more details about reproductions.)

About this painting

This painting is very much about the practice of not only being our authentic selves, but completely loving ourselves the way we are. It’s an ongoing practice, to be experienced moment by moment.

The gold mica flakes in this painting represent the gold deep within–that is your authentic self.

The circle in the top left hand corner represents how we repeat patterns, continuing to learn over and over again. This is described in detail in Buddhism quite often.

The transparent watery turquoise rivers embody the flow of energy from your authentic self towards you speaking your truth.

According to Richard Swartz, in his book No Bad Parts, when we’re in our authentic self, we embody these core elements:

  • Curiosity

  • Compassion

  • Confidence

  • Creativity

  • Connectedness

  • Courage

  • Calmness

While sharing this information with a friend, I thought to myself:

When I am feeling these emotions listed that tell me I’m in my authentic self, this would be a good time to make important decisions.

Little Gems Series

This original abstract painting is part of my Little Gems Series. I use these paintings as small studies to both explore new ideas and practice old ones. Similar to the way musicians do vocal exercises or practice their scales, this is a painter’s practice so-to-speak.

Every Little Gem is infused with the joy, love and passion that I feel in the studio and that energy is imbued into the painting–my gift to you!

About this painting

This contemporary abstract expressionist artwork was painted in 2024 and is acrylic on paper, measuring 9” x 12”.

The colour palette is primarily a range of blues, ranging from light blue to cobalt and aquamarine blues to turquoise. However, earthy shades of yellows and oranges can be seen peeking out from deep beneath the many textured layers of blues.

Sandy textures and repeated stencils of geometric flower shapes create a sense of tropical nature in this painting.

This painting is part of my Little Gems SeLittle Gems Seriesies of small paintings that help me hone my skills. I paint them for joy and fun. Are You Relaxed When You See a Scene Like This?

Let it go by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

I would like to share that my contemporary abstract painting Let it go is available for purchase. The original canvas painting is still available as well as high-quality reproductions.

The latter can be custom made according to your personal preferences in a variety of sizes and formats.

About this painting

Let it go is an abstract landscape painting inspired by the earth and sky with multiple layers of textures and acrylics.

The painting is reminiscent of some of my favourite camping spots in the forest near the ocean, on our beautiful islands of the Pacific Northwest.

Tranquil and subdued, subtle and relaxing, its earthy hues are further textured with layers of sand. You can see bits of the turquoise sky just peeking through at the top of the canvas, above mossy greens and echoes of sacred geometry patterns in the beach below.

This original abstract artwork was created in 2017, but only recently photographed and made available for purchase and prints.

This large one-of-a-kind mixed-media artwork is acrylic on canvas and measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

Which One of These Paintings Has a Hidden Bridge?

Heart Opener by Deb Chaney (36” x 48” x 1.5”)

This post is to celebrate my continued partnership with Van Gogh Designs. I have 4 original pieces of abstract contemporary artwork featured in their beautiful showroom in White Rock, British Columbia.

About these paintings

These original abstract paintings are on exhibit in the showroom, and the originals and prints are available for purchase.

The Writing Is In The Air - Gabriola is a watery blend of bluish-green, black, and white. This ink on canvas painting measures 40” x 30” x 0.5”.

Red Landscape has an earth-tone colour palette of umber, brownish-yellow, and a bit of grassy green. Layered in horizontal strips, the colours create a sense of depth as though looking across an autumn field beneath a sky of white and grey. The white outlines of a suspension bridge can be seen through the “fog”. It measures 48” x 36” x 1.5”.

Connection & Belonging has an earthy colour palette of light greens, yellows, and gold. Layers of sand give it texture while ruler-straight pencil lines connect numerous dots around the painting like a map, creating a sense of connection through cartography. This pencil-on-canvas painting measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

Heart Opener has a colour palette of striking pink under harsh layers of dark red bordered by deep purple and midnight blue. Bold and aggressive strokes and drips of bright white stand out against the painting’s dark foundation. This acrylic on canvas painting measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

New Original Artwork “Where (Forest and Beach) Become One”

Where (Forest and Beach) Become One by Deb Chaney (36” x 30’)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new abstract artwork. My original painting Where (Forest and Beach) Become One is now available for sale on Saatchi Art. The original painting is still available to collectors and you can also purchase high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

Before my (grown-up) daughter went travelling, she was living with me here on our beautiful little island, in the forest close to the ocean. We often shared these moments when what we needed most was – to just get out of the house! And this painting was inspired by one of our many on-island mini adventures.

One night we went to a beach that we adore and to get there we had to walk through the rainforest. It was dark outside and a million stars were shining down between the towering silhouettes of the trees. We stood on the beach, looking up through the treetops, and the place felt as though the ocean and the forest were becoming one.

This piece is designed to invite the viewer's imagination on a journey into nature. The abstract painting evokes a sense of landscape using a mix of earthy tones such as greens, blues, and browns, with hints of warm yellows and oranges.

The composition invites you to explore and contemplate the merging of these 2 distinct environments and encourages a sense of connection with the natural world – and the harmony to be found within.

New Original Artwork: Ho'Oponopono - Sepia

Ho'Oponopono - Sepia by Deb Chaney (30” x 40”)

This post is to celebrate and announce a recently completed new abstract painting, Ho'Oponopono - Sepia.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the story and power of Ho'oponopono, the Hawaiian shamanic prayer of reconciliation and forgiveness.

I was introduced to the book Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More by Joe Vitale and Ihaleakala Hew Len in 2019. The book recounts the extraordinary true story of Hew Len’s healing work at a prison for the criminally insane, and how he transformed and healed the prisoners through using this prayer.

I was approached by a heart-centered craniosacral healer in Vancouver, BC who asked me to paint a deeply textured painting inspired by this prayer and its Hawaiian origins. I created 3 paintings for her to choose from, and the prayer – I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you – is creatively integrated into them in a variety of ways. Two of the paintings now remain and are available to add to your own art collection: Ho'Oponopono - Blue and Ho'Oponopono - Sepia.

This painting possesses a grounding, earthy ambiance full of browns, umbers, and earth tones. These colours were applied with textured layers of ink, gels, and paper. Looking closely, you can see the prayer words of Ho’oponopono in the background, repeated over and over in typeface. The words are also etched into the paint and written in pencil and ink, in both cursive and stenciled block letters. Finally, the semblance of a tree form connects all of the words together.

There is a second Ho'oponopono - Sepia original painting that follows the same inspiration, and it is also available for your collection.
