Three New Paintings All About Creative Practice!

Serafina iii 9” x 12” Mixed Media on Paper, Little Gems Series, (c) 2022 Deb Chaney

I was hanging out with a friend and fellow artist a few weeks ago and we were talking about the conundrum that many of us creatives face regularly. That is, the need to rest, self care and take care of basic life stuff - housework, exercise, paperwork, etc - and the desire to execute and bring our big and grand creative ideas to life! Paint those big paintings, creative sculptures, write and record music… Often the former items win out on our time and we end up feeling sad about another day going by and we not getting to our creative dreams..

Perhaps you are curious how I get around this?

What I shared with my friend was a middle ground approach that has been my Little Gems Series for over two decades now (where does time go? !). These small paintings are a quick way for me to get into the studio, play around within given parameters that I give myself, and get my ‘creativity on’ without over doing it.

My friend and i went to the studio after talking about “the conundrum” and we both blissfully painted 3 paintings each within the same parameters we gave ourselves:

1) These paintings were inspired by play and fun

2) We were only ‘allowed’ to use turquoise and burnt orange

3) We decided we’d use a vertical composition.

The above featured painting is one of my three paintings from this little parallel session artist date, the other paintings can be found here on Saatchi Online Gallery.

The featured painting is available for your collection and may be purchased online here:

The painting I was invited to include in this group show is entitled “Tangled Heart” 23" x 30" x 1.5" Mixed media on 300 pound arches paper mounted on wood panel and is part of my Fragments of Life Series.

About “Tangled Heart” We often fragment parts of ourselves in various relationships and situations so that we 'fit in' or that people like us. This fragmentation is a contraction away from our true selves. By consciously making art I reclaim the fragments, re-align to my authentic self and allow my full expanded being to be and shine in this world.

This painting can be purchased at the gallery during the exhibit dates (MARCH 15 - APRIL 9, 2022) or online via Saatchi Online Gallery: https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Fragments-of-Life-23-Tangled-Heart/499285/3406523/view

GABRIOLA ISLAND, British Columbia, Canada, March 9th, 2022 - The Gabriola Island Library will present the work of abstract painter Deb Chaney. This show entitled "68 Reasons To Celebrate Creativity”, on exhibit from Wednesday March 9, 2022 - Saturday April 30th , 2022, is a celebration of two decades of painting and being creative process. Showing  twenty small framed 9” x 12” mixed media abstract paintings on paper and several 23” x 30” mixed media paintings on 300 cold press paper mounted on wood panel will be on display in conjunction with her recently published card deck: The 68 Secrets of an Illuminated Artist: How to Stay In Your Creative Flow Despite Any Obstacle. All of the paintings in this exhibit were used as backgrounds for for the inspirational card pack.

This art installation is unique as it is interactive involves the viewer with a Treasure Hunt based on the story of a young girl named Anna who comes to visit the library with her Dad in search of creative inspiration for her school painting project. The Treasure Hunt story leads participants on a journey to connect the exhibited artwork to the short descriptions in the card pack and fill them into the supplied handout. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the artwork and enjoy getting creatively inspired with the stories’ heroin Anna.

The 68 Secrets of an Illuminated Artist cards was created over a ten year period that despite going through many personal challenges the artist continued to make art consistently. Curious about how and what had propelled her to continue her creativity, despite these challenges, Deb went back through ten years of her journals and found notes, ideas an inspirations that had pulled her through her those tough times and supported her to persevere with her creative dream.  With the editorial help of a retired English teacher, together they culled the best personal insights from her journals and the original card pack was created. This year, the artist took the pack to the next level and digitally placed an original piece of her artwork in the background of all sixty eight cards.

Shares Waheeda Byron, vice president of the Gabriola Island’s Palette People Artist Group: “I am currently working on 20 water colour paintings as  illustrations for a book my friend is writing. It is a big project with a deadline. I choose a card randomly each day and the art and quote help motivate me to keep on track with my project.”

The card pack is currently available for purchase online at https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/the-68-secrets-of-an-illuminated-artist, at Free Spirit Gallery and Paige’s Marina Bookstore on Gabriola Island. It is also in consideration to be sold at Opus Framing and Art Supply stores throughout British Columbia.

“People have taken the time to drop back to the store to share how much they look forward to pulling one of Deb’s cards as part of their creative routine; so full of beauty and inspiration.”  - Gloria Hatfield, Owner & President, Page’s Resort Bookstore.

This exhibit features original paintings many of which were created in front of workshop groups taught by Deb Chaney between 2014 and 2020. These artworks were live demonstrations of various mixed media techniques including; glazing with transparent layers, gold leaf applications, stencil work, integration of sand texture, layering with polymer mediums to create wax/encaustic effects, etching, and integrating collage elements into abstract artwork. These small paintings, which are part of Deb’s foundational art practice, her Little Gems Series, have influenced her work in two important ways. That is, by consistently creating small paintings in the mindset of play, experimentation, and practice, it has helped her maintain her creative flow for two decades. Secondly, many of these Little Gems Series paintings have been licensed and reproduced into large format prints on canvas and purchased by hotels, developments, restaurants and interior design companies in BC, Alberta and Ontario. Most notably in 2019, when the Hilton Hotel in Calgary Alberta purchased several hundred reproductions of her work for each room of their newly renovated hotel.

Deb Chaney is a Gabriola Island based abstract painter and has been creating her spiritually inspired mixed media abstract paintings for two decades. She exhibits internationally in public art, corporations, TV and Film, and her work appears in public and private collections. Her paintings are composed of many intriguing layers and textures, the creation of which helps her remain in the moment and supports her healing journey. More about the artist at: www.debchaney.com

Original Painting ' You and Me Together ' sold and shipped to San Matteo, California, USA

I’d like to deeply thanks Ms. J. Garibaldi of San Matteo, CA for recently purchasing this original little gem mixed media abstract painting ‘You and Me Together’ 9” x 12”on paper. This one of a kind unique painting is part of my Little Gems Series . During the process of packing up the original artwork, it brought back fond memories of its creation whereby I was listening to my playlist and the song by Dave Matthews Band came on with the lyrics ‘You and Me Together’. When I noticed the ‘US’ spray painted lettering in the piece in conjunction with the song, I had to name is in memory of this moment of creation along with the music.

The Little Gems paintings are my practice pieces and all about fun, joy, play and are a wonderful way to start your collection of my original artwork. You can see more painting in this series here: https://www.saatchiart.com/art-collection/painting/Litte-Gems-Small-9-x12-Paintings/499285/160111/view

This painting image may be appearing on music CD cover soon.... (stay tuned)

!LOVE! sweet moments like this... Just got approached by a band who would like to license this image 'Belinda's Painting' on their CD cover. Honoured and excited about this possibility!

This original painting ‘Belind'a’s Painting’ is part of my Little Gems Series and was created while I was offering a private painting lessons to Belinda McNeice in mixed media abstract painting several years ago. In this case we were integrating collage materials (old book sheets) with acrylics and pastels. So much fun!

The original sold a few years ago now to Kristi Calderon . THANK YOU & big love always to my dear collectors.

Two Paintings 'Romance i and ii' use Feng Shui to Support & Attract A Relationship In Your Life

In celebration of Valentines day, I am featuring two paintings ‘Romance i and ii’ who together are in support of love and relationships!

I’d also like to thank the art collector who recently purchased an open edition print of the rose pink white and light magenta abstract painting of mine entitled ‘Romance ii’ via Saatchi Online Gallery.

This above featured original painting, Romance ii, is part of a diptych and both paintings are each 24 W x 36 H x 1.5 D in Mixed Media on Canvas.

These two modern contemporary paintings were made while I was living in Santa Barbara, California, USA. They were created using a soft flat brush alternating thin layers of translucent pink-gold with gloss varnish as well as washes of magenta and dark pink liquid acrylic paints. The paintings were inspired by the beauty and etherial colours of pink-gold and the joy and love I felt working in this palette.

The colour pink is thought to be calming and associated with love, kindness, and femininity. Many people immediately associate the colour with all things feminine and therefor nurturing. It might also bring to mind romance and Valentine's Day as it often represents femininity and romance.

In the art of Feng Shui, it is recommended to place both these painting in the back right hand corner of your home or a particular room your are decorating, in support of or to attract your relationship and partnership with a meaningful another.

Romance i and Romance ii original paintings are available for your art collection and can be purchased via Saatchi online gallery here: Romance i and ii Paintings by Deb Chaney.

New Work! The Original 'Writing Is In The Air' Black & White Paintings !

The Writing is in the Air - Original Black - II of II (diptych) 24 W x 24 H x 1 D in Ink & Mixed Media on Canvas (c) Deb Chaney 2021

The ‘Writing Is In The Air’ was a series of painting that came and went out of nowhere last year…

What happened was this:

Braid Street Studios where I’d been working were closed down, to be torn down for a new high rise building to be built in its place. During the “evacuation of artists’ a very sweet and kind fellow artist gifted me a whole bunch of bank canvases on her way out!

I decided to do something different with these blank canvases, and played around with pencil and ink, getting my inspiration for these paintings from passages while re-reading ‘The Universe Has Your Back’ spiritual inspiration book by Gabi Bernstein.

(This is a wonderful book, highly recommend it!)

I started each painting by writing down a key phrase or words in acrylic and India inks that really spoke to me and then layered them with water , gesso and acrylic mediums, focussing on simplicity and less-is-more.

If you are familiar with my heavily textured work - sand and gel - this series definitely was a departure for me, but fun to explore!

All that said, this painting, The Writing Is In The Air - Original - Black II’ 24” x 24” x 1” Mixed Media on canvas,

along with its brother painting ‘ The Writing Is In The Air - Original - Black I’ were the first two paintings that started the series and they have a beautifully old-book-like aged quality to them that was really only captured in these first two paintings.

Both of these paintings are available for your collection at Saatchi online gallery. You can purchase them online here:

This Painting Title Was Inspired by Taylor Swift Lyrics....

Loving Him Was Blue 9 W x 12 H x 0.2 D in. Acrylic & Charcoal on Paper (c) Deb Chaney 2021

One of the foundational part of my artistic practice is to continuously create small paintings in my Little Gems Series that are often comprised of left-over paint from the larger format paintings and really all about fun, play and practice.

These small paintings, for me, are like what playing scales are doing voice-warms ups, are for a musician. It’s my painter’s version of a warm up and practice.

If I have a good playlist going while I’m in the studio creating these works, I may hear a lyric that resonates and use it for the title of the painting - in the case of this painting which was inspired by a Taylor Swift song off her Red album - the re-released Taylor’s Version of course.

(Don’t want to upset any serious Taylor Swift fans!)

And for the very discerning Taylor Swift fan, they will know this lyric is from the song Red.

This painting is available for your art collection and can be purchased via Saatchi Online Gallery.

Little Gems Painting Original 'IBLCL vii' Recently Sold

IBLCL 9” x 12” Mixed Media on Paper (c) Deb Chaney 2021

It is always a big honour for me when another artists becomes a collector of my artwork. I would like thank my friend and fellow artist Suman Sengar for becoming a collector of this original piece ‘ IBLBL vii’ 9” x 12” Mixed Media on Paper.

So much love and joy and pure play energy when into this painting and it was created in a series of work

which I created during the intense quarantine period of the pandemic when we were not supposed to leave our houses except for essential needs such as groceries and medical visits. So, as I shared in the blog I wrote last week, I basically used the time to paint and create! … and continue to do so as we continue into year #2 of this pandemic.

If you look very closely into the painting you will see the words: ‘Labor of Love’ that were taken from a found piece of collage from an old book and was part of the painting’s ground and beginning before other elements were added such as spray paint and corrugated cardboard.

I love the complexity and playful energy of this piece. Inter connecting all the layers keeps me busy and focussed in its creation and I feel is a healing experience for me and often for the receiver of the painting.

There are a few more small original paintings in this series available for your collection which you can purchase online here at Saatchi Art Gallery.

New Painting BIWT i ! This Original Modern Layered Textured Abstract Painting is all about the Transformative Power of Creativity!

BIWT i 36 W x 24 H x 0.5 D in mixed media, collage, spray paint on Canvas (c) Deb Chaney 2021

As we continue the experience of the world wide pandemic unexpectedly into its second year the majority of us are in the situation of nowhere to go, not much to do. For artists, this is ideal for creative production and I found myself handling the inability to make travel plans as my ability to go inward and to make art, more art and even more art.

One of my teachers would say that going into her studio and making art was her way of running away from home without really leaving. I love this!

Making art means that I get to dive into unknown world of layers of spray paint, collage, paint gestures, layers of translucent mediums and nobody can stop me! I get to create!

This painting called BIWT stands for ‘ Because I Want To’ and created in series at the time when the quarantine was the most intense.

It is really and truly stands for the power of creative process and how it can be the healthiest and most beautiful way to handle stress, challenges and tragedy.

Angry, frustrated, or fed up with the current situation? Then why no make art about it ? That is how I choose to move forward. My art statement for this painting is the transformative quality of being in creative process and how we can turn challenging emotions into beautiful creations.

This painting is available for your collection and you can purchase it here online at Saatchi Art Gallery.

Helpful Moving Tips for Artists and Art Collectors

If you’re an artist, moving to a new home can be especially stressful. Not only do you have to worry about protecting your essential art supplies throughout the moving process, you might be concerned about transporting sculptures, paintings, or other pieces that you’ve collected over the years. But with advanced planning, you can navigate the process with ease. And when you arrive in your new home, you can spruce it up with unique paintings by Deb Chaney! Here are a few tips on protecting your valuable art supplies and beloved artwork.

Tackle Home Repairs First
Before you begin the process of carefully storing and packing your fine art pieces, you’ll need to take care of a few tasks in your current home. Prior to putting your house on the market, it’s a good idea to tackle minor repairs on your own. This will make the property more appealing for buyers and help you sell on a faster timeline. You can also hire contractors to take care of more labor-intensive repairs, like fixing cracked windows or leaking pipes.

Hire Professional Movers
You might be nervous to entrust any of your art supplies or pieces to anyone but yourself. But professional movers who have experience working with fragile items can be a big help during your move. To find the right moving company, Neighbor recommends calling several companies and asking them to come to your home so they can assess your inventory. Tell them about your unique packing needs. They can discuss their procedures for packing and transporting fragile items and give you an accurate price quote.

Get the Right Supplies

Even if you’re hiring professional movers, there’s a good chance that you will be handling much of the packing process on your own. In order to pack up large items like a kiln oven or blank canvases, you’ll need the right supplies. Get large boxes that can comfortably fit these items, and make sure you have packing materials to cushion them, like unprinted news wrapping paper, bubble wrap, and even furniture pads.

Storing Fine Art
What if you’ll be living with friends or family in between moving out of your current home and moving into your new one? You’ll need to put some items, including your art supplies and artwork into temporary storage. If you’ll be storing artwork, you’ll need to select a storage space very carefully. Art Business News states that you should clean your artwork first with a soft microfiber cloth and cover it with cloth or parchment paper. Ideally, you’ll want to store your artwork in a dark, windowless, climate-controlled space with about 50 percent humidity and a temperature between 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Handling Fragile Items
You may want to unpack your fragile items shortly after arriving for peace of mind. Although working with reliable, experienced movers will greatly decrease the chances of a mishap, it’s important to know what to do if something valuable should break in the course of your move. If any of your art supplies or pieces of artwork are damaged, you will need to carefully assess the extent of the damage and file a claim with the moving company. Furthermore, for extra protection, you may want to get insurance for your most valuable items before you move. While this is an additional expense, you might feel more secure knowing that you have another option for reimbursement.

Packing up your art supplies and art collection for a big move can be nerve-wracking. But you can easily preserve all of these items while you relocate. With the right strategy, you’ll arrive at your new home with all of your most important belongings in great condition!

New Work! The Writing Is In The Air Magenta - Watercolour Style Painting

This new original contemporary abstract art piece was created recently in late 2021 in a small series of paintings called ‘The Writing Is In The Air’ . The series was inspired by a very inspirational personal growth book I was re-reading for about the third time called The Universe has your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein. I started each painting in the series by writing on penciled in lines (like a large note book created on canvas) choosing phrases and statements I found particularly uplifting and placing them in cursive using acrylic inks and liquid acrylics along the lines of the paintings. The fun began when the words smudged and dripped into each other and became their own hieroglyphic art form of energy meaning rather than their literal words. It was so fun I had to paint more, hence the series was born!

‘The Writing Is In The Air - Magenta’ original painting as shown above is 30” x 40” x 0.5” mixed media on canvas. In Its colouring its predominantly purple, also with hints of magenta, violet, orchid pink, lavender, lilac, mauve, plum, amethyst, heliotrope, mulberry, pomegranate, wine, amaranthine, blue-violet, bluish-red, perse, reddish blue and violaceous. (Just in case you were wondering.) :-) These colours are in synergy with and elevate the imagination and spirituality. It is an introspective color, allowing us to get in touch with our deeper thoughts. Purple or violet assists those who seek the meaning of life and spiritual fulfillment - it expands our awareness, connecting us to a higher consciousness. For this reason it is associated with transformation of the soul and the philosophers of the world are often attracted to it.

Using the principle of Feng Shui and overlaying the ‘Bagua’ on the layout of your home or bedroom. Place this painting in the back left hand corner of your living/working space to further support and accentuate the area of wealth and prosperity in your life.

Five New Original Artworks Inspired by The Ocean Underwater

new art iii

Introducing five new original abstract paintings from my Little Gems Series fresh from the studio! The inspiration and background behind these acrylic and ink on paper fine art creations is that I watched the beautiful, inspiring and oh-so emotional documentary film ‘My Octopus Teacher’ and became enthralled by the beauty of the ocean. Total honesty? I cry just re-watching the trailer. This film is magnificent. The paintings are a by-product of my experience watching this movie.

New art iv

These are predominantly blue coloured paintings with hints of water-inspired turquoise, green, and azule, sky blue, azure, cobalt (blue), sapphire, cerulean, navy (blue), saxe (blue), Oxford blue, Cambridge blue, ultramarine, lapis lazuli, indigo, aquamarine, teal (blue), cyan, colour of the sky, of the colour of the sea and/or ocean. These colours in resonance with spirituality, intuition, inspiration and inner peace.

new art i

These gentle ocean paintings would work well to support the interior design of your bedroom or living room. Placing these paintings, with their soothing analogous colours and soft shapes, in a room where you intend to relax and let go of your day would work well to support you in creating a sanctuary in your home.

Following the principles of Feng Shui, and using the bagua concept, these paintings would accentuate the introspection and inner wisdom area of your life development and personal growth, as well as supporting your inner peace, specifically by placing them in the back left hand corner room of your room/home/office.

Original Abstract Painting ‘A Mermaid's Adventure’ Currently On Display at SIMS Real-Estate Office

I am very excited to share this abstract original painting ‘A Mermaid's Adventure’ that is now available for your art collection or as a TV/Film Rental for your current production and is available for you to see at the SIMS real-estate office in Nanaimo, BC.

'A Mermaid's Adventure' is a 36“ x 36“ x 1.5“ multi-layered and textured painting created with mixed media on canvas and inspired by the ever-moving ocean and all the treasures and love within it. The artist imagines mermaids swimming around and within the creation. With collage elements, gold sparkles, acrylic paints, polymer mediums and even pieces of burlap, this modern mixed media artwork is a journey and feast for the eyes to explore!

Part of Deb Chaney's Pure Abstraction Series, these paintings each contain much texture and depth in their exploration of abstract painting and begin by the artist's hikes and beach walks, her inspiration from nature. As famous artist Marc Chagall write's; "Great art picks up where nature ends." The paintings in this series are known for their neutral and calming colour tones and are excellent for interior design of a bedroom or living room, places where you aim to relax at the end of your time.

A Mermaid's Adventure is a one-of-a-kind modern art painting is predominantly green in its colouring, also reminiscent of viridescent; olive green, pea green, grass green, emerald green, lime green, bottle green, Lincoln green, sea green, and sage green. The colour green is all about Love! When you 'bathe' in the frequency of the green colour you receive balance, soothing and can enjoy a feeling of relaxation leading to peace, harmony and renewal. Ultimately its a healing colour, signifying balance, peace and supports well-being.

According to simple Feng Shui principles, by placing this painting directly on the left hand side wall of your home or room you are decorating, is said to then support you the area in your life of family. Supporting community building and strength in your tribe.

This artwork also has hints - can you find the heart? - of purple, sometimes known as violet, indigo or magenta, is a colour that in indicative of the resonance of wealth, opportunity and royalty. We are thinking the mermaid's may have found the heart and placed it in their treasure chests within their underwater castles...

Placing original artwork intentionally in your home as a tool for its staging for sale, or to settle in and make it really feel like your own home, is a powerful to create and elevate your home from ordinary to extraordinary.

I'd like to thank the interior designers and condo development decision makers for choosing to place several reproduction fine artwork pieces of my painting ‘Sun Scorched Earth’ in your new Devmont Montreal building development. I am honoured. Thank you so very much for choosing my art!
