Paintings Donated to Gabriola Island's Annual Salmon BBQ

Cultivate Your Goodness by Deb Chaney (4” x 6”)

Last summer I donated a painting to the wonderful Gabriola Island Community Hall to be auctioned off at its annual Salmon BBQ fundraiser. I absolutely love our beautiful, vibrant Gabriola community, and I feel so fortunate and am so grateful to live here. As my way of giving back, this year I am donating 3 paintings to the silent auction.

For this year’s auction, I created 3 little canvas pieces that work together but can stand alone specifically for this event. Each abstract painting is 4" x 6" x 1 1/4".

About the Paintings

These precious creations are a heartfelt expression of my love, gratitude, and passion for the enchanting Gabriola Island. It all began when I stumbled upon a newspaper clipping in The Sounder, highlighting a salmon barbecue event and soliciting donations. Filled with excitement, I embarked on a creative journey by incorporating snippets from The Sounder, using them as a foundation for my paintings.

As serendipity would have it, I also discovered a collection of maps, left on a stand in a free bookstore on our street. These maps, adorned with captivating images of the ocean and neighboring islands, felt perfectly fitting.

With deep chromium oxide green paint and dashes of blue, I carefully infused the canvases, allowing them to dry and set the stage for what was to come. Drawing inspiration from my tranquil forest walks on the island, I meticulously crafted silhouette images using organic materials I had gathered along the way. Each stroke and placement was guided by a profound sense of connection to the surrounding nature.

To bring everything together, a final coat of clear gloss adds a protective seal, reinforcing the unity of all the elements.

These creations are not only a gift to our community, but also a testament to the kindness, support, and profound sense of belonging I experience through life on this island. With sincere appreciation, I extend my deepest thanks.

The paintings up for auction are:

  • Cultivate Your Goodness (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

  • Grow your Kindness (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

  • Allow Your Inner Wild (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

New Original Artwork "Yearning Warmth and Light"

Yearning Warmth and Light by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to announce and celebrate finishing a new abstract painting. Yearning Warmth and Light has recently become available for sale on Saatchi Art. You can currently still purchase the original painting or choose to order high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

This is the second of the 3 spiritually-inspired paintings that I mentioned in last week’s post. recently created. The newly created small paintings are the result of my trying to figure out how to go about creating my new large-scale Drishti Painting Series. These small practice pieces have helped me work out how to integrate sacred geometry marks using textures and layers.

Whereas the first painting last week, Turn the Lights On, was a canvas full of vivid pinks, Yearning Warmth and Light is a verdurous palette of greens and blues. Viridescent layers of olive, emerald, and lime greens combine with aquamarine, light blues, and splashes of white.

Textured sacred geometry is repeated up and down and across the canvas with stencils of the Flower of Life, creating movement and depth, as though the canvas itself has been cut away.

The choice of gentle greens and blues is intended to create a sense of calm and be a nourishing, grounding influence.

This contemporary mixed-media painting is part of my Little Gems Series.

New Original Artwork “Turn The Lights On”

Turn The Lights On by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new abstract artwork. Turn The Lights On is now available for sale on Saatchi Art. You can currently buy the original painting or high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

Fresh out of the studio, this is one of 3 new spiritually inspired artworks that I recently created. The small paintings were inspired by the process of figuring out how to create my new large-scale Drishti Painting Series. I have been using these small practice pieces to work out the integration of sacred geometry marks using textures and layers.

A gamut of vivid pinks, including magenta, rose, and salmon, are spotted with dimples of yellow and gold, while textured layers of sacred geometry create mesmerizing depths to lead your eye around the canvas.

Concentric circles and stencils of the Flower of Life are repeated across the canvas on multiple layers, floating above light yellows, blues, and whites far in the background.

The bright pinks are uplifting and exuberant in creating this loving, heartfelt piece of art. This contemporary mixed media painting is part of my Little Gems Series.

New Original Artwork "He Sailed to Platea"

He Sailed to Platea by Deb Chaney (11'“ x 15”)

This post is to celebrate the availability of my abstract painting now available for sale. You can buy both the original painting and high-quality prints (in various sizes) online through Saatchi Art. In a recent post, I mentioned that I had just found some paintings of mine from 2019 that had not been catalogued. He Sailed to Platea is one of the artworks that was among those paintings.

When I came upon the 3 paintings, I immediately set about photographing them for the website in order to make them available to share with you. This is the final painting in the trio and, like the two before it, He Sailed to Platea can now be seen for the first time since its creation 4 years ago!

These newly found abstract artworks are now all officially part of my Little Gems Series.

About This Painting

My Little Gems Series is an ongoing collection of paintings that start out as practice pieces. I use them to try out new ideas and techniques as well as to practice old ones. The passion and enthusiasm and love for art that I feel in the studio is expressed in every piece I create. And all of this energy is passed on through the canvas as my gift to you.

He Sailed to Platea is a mixed media collage painting measuring 11” x 15”. That makes it a little bigger than my other Little Gems, which are typically 9” x 12”. Like the other 2 pieces of art in this newly found trio of paintings, its inspiration comes from the collaging of old books and the beautiful tissue paper of dressmaking.

Sharing the same colour palette with the first 2 paintings, He Sailed to Platea is composed of yellow and ochre, many shades of grey, and a striking line of turquoise that evokes a river. The earth tones, bright blues, and hints of organic elements further create a connection to the natural world.

A dynamic arrangement of geometric shapes, lines, and pencil strokes evokes a sense of movement and energy that emanates throughout the entire piece. And typed pages torn from old books are collaged with layers of acrylic paint, charcoal, gesso, and pastels. Like ancient texts, the pages are aged with yellows and browns, inviting us to explore the past.

New Original Artwork "The Command Was Given"

The Command Was Given by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

This post is to celebrate one of my original abstract artworks becoming available for sale. The original is for sale online through Saatchi Art and so are high-quality prints in a variety of sizes. This painting, The Command Was Given, was among the paintings that I recently discovered, as I mentioned in last week’s post.

As noted last week, I found a few prints that I painted way back in 2019. The abstract paintings are all part of my Little Gems Series, although they’d never been documented and catalogued. Therefore, I promptly photographed them and made them available to share with you. This is the second of 3 paintings which, just like the previous one, is now being seen for the first time since I painted it 4 years ago!

About This Painting

My ongoing Little Gems Series is a collection of paintings that begin as practice pieces. I use them to hone my skills as well as explore and try out new techniques and ideas. Each painting in the series is bursting with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio. And all of that energy and positivity is infused in every piece of artwork – which becomes my gift to you!

This mixed media collage painting is slightly bigger than most of my Little Gems, which usually measure 9” x 12”. Just like the first piece in this trio of paintings, it measures 11” x 15” and is also inspired by collaging old books and the beautiful tissue paper used in dressmaking.

This painting has the same colour palette as the first painting, One of The Originals, although the ochre, yellow, and turquoise are more prominent. Pages cut and torn from old books are collaged with layers of acrylic paint, charcoal, gesso, and pastels. Gesture marks, scribbles, and geometric shapes encourage the viewer to explore every inch of the canvas. The typed pages are weathered and aged, creating a curiosity about the past.

New Original Artwork “One of The Originals”

One of the Originals by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

This post is to celebrate a piece of my original artwork becoming newly available along with high-quality prints. I recently discovered One of The Originals along with some other prints that I painted back in 2019. They are part of my Little Gems collection but had yet to be documented. So, after photographing them, I’m excited to share them with you. This is the first of 3 paintings, which can now be seen for the first time since its creation!

About This Painting

As mentioned, this painting is part of my perennial Little Gems Series. These small paintings are my practice pieces which I use to explore and test new techniques and ideas, while also honing and practicing old ones. Every painting is infused with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio when creating art. And that energy is imbued into the painting – my gift to you!

Measuring 11” x 15”, this mixed media painting is a little bit bigger than the typical 9” x 12” size of most of my Little Gems. It is inspired by the process of collaging old books and the beautiful tissue paper used in dressmaking.

Collaged pages of old books mingle with rich layers of acrylic paint, charcoal, gesso, and pastel to create a visually dynamic surface that invites expiration and contemplation. Distressed surfaces alongside striking marks and scratches juxtapose more curious and playful looping pencil strokes and circles.

The book pages are aged with yellow and ochre paints to create a sense of antiquity, while other colours include splashes of vibrant turquoise, patches of black, and a lot of grey and white.

New Original Artwork “AFXo”

AFXo by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new piece of original abstract artwork titled AFXo. The original is available for sale along with high-quality prints, both of which can be ordered online at Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This painting is part of my ongoing Little Gems Series. The small paintings begin as small studies in exploring new ideas and techniques while also practicing old ones. Each Little Gem is infused with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio when creating my artwork. All of that energy is imbued into the painting and becomes my gift to you!

The painting features a harmonious blend of materials and techniques. Bold brushstrokes contrast with delicate drops, swooping gestures, and circles to create a sense of motion, evoking circling and diving birds.

Rich blues and reds intermingle with earthy neutrals of sepia and beige, while thick, dark layers juxtapose a lighter, watery background. Finally, sand and etching marks create added texture and depth in this spiritual work.

Original Artwork "The Lost Poem" Sold

The Lost Poem by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract artwork, The Lost Poem. It was recently purchased by Ms. Jackson of Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks and appreciation that you have chosen to add my painting to your collection.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the idea of old writings – texts and books and poems – being lost for long periods of time and how they are often full of ancient wisdom and insights. When we finally discover these lost writings, it is like striking cultural gold.

The abstract painting features a rich tapestry of colours, textures, and expressive brushstrokes that come together harmoniously on the canvas. The main colours are gold and blue, with many tones and hues of each. Exploring the canvas, you will discover azure, cobalt, cerulean, turquoise, and more, contrasting with amber, lemon, and other yellows.

Layers of acrylic paint have been applied to multiple layers of collage with pages from old books, textured corrugated cardboard, and gold leaf, resulting in a complex and multidimensional surface.

Original Artwork “Full Moon Frog Pond” Sold

Full Moon Frog Pond by Deb Chaney (8” x 10”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of original artwork from my Full Moon Frog Pond series of paintings. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Mrs. Bev McNicoll of British Columbia, Canada for her purchase of the painting Full Moon Frog Pond #02-003. I’m so excited that you love this piece and I’m eager to see the frame you choose and where you place this unique, little deckled edge painting in your home. Thank you for becoming a collector.

About This Painting

This painting is part of a series in which I collaborated with composer Gregory Rosa to create a special edition collection of “pieces of the pond”. A few of these paintings were made available with a limited edition Full Moon Frog Pond CD. You can sample the music that accompanies the art on Gregory Rosa’s website here: http://www.gregoryrosa.com/

The painting’s colour palette consists of many hues of green – from dark to light to mossy to turquoise. The grassy greens give a sense of a verdant marsh or pond, while the large, textured blue-green circle emerging from the upper corner elicits a closeup of a frog’s eye.

Its many layers add a tactile quality to the painting, creating an engaging visual experience. The composition is rich with depth and complexity, inviting the eye to explore every corner of the canvas and see it in different ways. For example, bold straight lines of black ink alongside lighter squiggles elicit an aerial view far removed from the closeup perspective.

The Universe is Your Sanctuary i

The Universe is Your Sanctuary i by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate my newly completed original artwork, The Universe is Your Sanctuary i. The original painting is available for purchase online through Saatchi Art. High-quality prints are also available for your collection.

About This Painting

This painting is the first in a series of 3 paintings that are part of my larger series, known as my Little Gems Series. These paintings are my practice pieces, small artworks that I use to explore new methods and ideas and practice old ones.

Each piece of artwork that becomes a Little Gem is infused with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio. That energy is imbued into the painting and is my gift to you, the collector!

The 9” x 12” painting is acrylic on loose canvas.

At first glance, it’s like looking into deep space through the Hubble telescope, as the painting exudes a sense of cosmic energy and celestial wonder. Sacred geometry intermingles with stars against a striking black-and-white composition layered with splashes of rich blues, teals, and magenta, conjuring the depths of the universe. Together the colours create a harmonious symphony of tones to evoke a sense of serenity and tranquility.

Evoking the vastness of the universe, the abstract artwork invites contemplation and introspection. It would particularly make a great addition to any room where you’re looking to ignite your imagination.

Original Artwork Clearing Fear Sold

Clearing Fear by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

This is a post to celebrate the sale of my original artwork. I would like to extend a warm thank you to the Florida-based interior design firm, LC Designs, for purchasing my mixed media abstract painting Clearing Fear. I am very excited to see where this artwork is placed and I am truly grateful for your choosing my image for your interior design installation.

About This Painting

This painting is about “living above the line”. This is a lifestyle concept for well-being in which we choose mindful compassion and loving kindness in our behaviour and being. It rejects living “below the line”, which has us acting out of reaction, with hatred, jealousy, vengeance, or anger.

Living in this place of love requires conscious awareness. And I believe we must practice this elevated way of being, using all possible resources to remain there. This painting Clearing Fear is vibrationally imbued with the intention and sense of recognizing and accepting your fears, then releasing them to wash away.

This large-scale artwork measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”. The spiritually inspired painting is heavily textured and consists of the colours of white, gold, light blue, and eggshell.

As you can tell by the title, this is part of a series of 3 paintings. They were created while I was teaching a 3-day mixed media abstract painting workshop at the Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island in Washington State.

I was sharing with the class techniques for layering, incorporating elements of collage while giving attention to the use of space and applying marks with mindful repetition. I am always grateful for this class at this beautiful location which I hold so dear to my heart.

The painting uses space to create a tranquil and ethereal sense of airy openness. Darker forest greens contrast with lighter, mossy greens and white. Small repetitive squares, concentric circles, and gesture marks create motion on top of typeset words collaged below.

As mentioned above, this abstract painting is included in my Little Gems Series, which are small paintings that I create to try new techniques and practice old ones. And, of course, for fun.

New Original Artwork: What goes around comes Around

What goes around comes around by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of my new original abstract artwork, What goes around comes around. The one-of-a-kind original painting is now available for purchase at Saatchi Art online. High-quality prints are also available in a range of sizes.

About This Painting

For the past couple of years, since 2021, I have been in the process of working on a series of very large format paintings I call my Drishti Paintings. I have put a tremendous amount of thought and intention into these paintings. On top of that, working on such large canvases, with layers of mediums and sand, is a lengthy process. One layer must dry before I can add, or take- away, the next layer.

In the meantime, I often add to my Little Gems series of paintings, such as this one, to use extra paint and to allow myself some playtime with a quick and satisfying finished end product.

The title of this painting will be relevant to anyone who knows me personally and is privy to the down point in my life at this time. Not everyone in the world is kind or acts in ways that feel good to us. But I figure “what goes around comes around”. And so does Justin Timberlake.

This playful abstract painting feels uplifting with bright and sunny colours like orange and tangerine. Large, swooping circles and gestures in whites and blacks add movement and a sense of vitality to the painting.

As mentioned above, this painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a series of small paintings that are created for fun as well as for testing new techniques and practicing old ones.

New Original Artwork: Re-Claiming II of II

Re-Claiming II of II by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate my new original abstract painting, Re-Claiming II of II. The original painting as well as high-quality prints are now available to add to your art collection.

About This Painting

This painting captures the energy of our third chakra, also known as the Manipura Chakra, which is the energy centre that determines how we go about owning our personal power. Located in the region of our body around the navel, it is also called the solar plexus chakra. The affirmation to unlock and heal this chakra is “I Am Powerful”.

The painting is called Re-Claiming because I painted this while working a day job in the paint department of our local hardware store. Whenever my three-day work week came to an end, I would rest, then find myself consciously reclaiming my creative practice and getting back into the studio.

This painting is in support of you reclaiming your own creative flow.

This mixed-media on-paper painting is part of my Little Gems Series, which are my practice pieces. They are small-scale studies to explore new ideas and practice old ones. Just as musicians do vocal exercises or practice their scales, this is how a painter practices, so to speak. They are infused with the joy, love, and passion that I feel in the studio, and that energy is imbued into the painting – my gift to you!

The dominant colour in this painting is deep, bright yellow, which is bold and textured, to create a sunny, uplifting flow. Stark black brushstrokes and shadows add more texture, giving it further depth. With a sense of playfulness, adventure, and energy, it can add warmth and vitality to either your living or work space.

New Original Artwork: Becoming II of II

Becoming II of II by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of my new original abstract painting titled Becoming II of II

About This Painting

This is the second piece in my pair of Becoming paintings. As mentioned in the previous post about the first painting, during the creative process of these paintings, I contemplated my journey of becoming an artist. This involved reflecting on how my journey began and recalling the sense of flow and fun that I experienced each step of the way.

Years back, while living in California, I participated in the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show along the waterfront. A painting titled Nouveau Monde was one of the first that I completed, and I actually sold it quite quickly after it was finished. It truly made me feel like I was on my way to becoming the artist I wanted to be.

Prints of the Nouveau Monde are available for purchase online here:

The pink-gold colours in Becoming II of II are reminiscent of my earlier painting, Nouveau Monde. The same is true for the composition’s simplicity and the lines, though stronger, crossing the canvas. Similar to Becoming I of II, it resembles an aerial view of the ocean and the beach, although with a smaller, slightly more turbulent sea. Its subtle energy has a delicateness to it, which is something we feel when we are beginning a new experience or chapter in our lives.

This mixed-media-on-paper painting measures 9” x 12” and is part of my Little Gems Series paintings.

About This Painting

Throughout the creative process, while painting this abstract artwork, I contemplated my journey of becoming an artist. I reflected on how it all began and remembered the sense of flow and fun that I experienced each step of the way.

The pink-gold colours in Becoming I of II are reminiscent of that earlier painting, as are the simplicity of composition and thin horizontal lines dragging lazily across the canvas. It resembles an aerial view of the ocean and the beach. Its calm, subtle energy has a delicateness to it, which is something we feel when we are beginning a new experience or chapter in our lives.

New Original Artwork: The Matrix

The Matrix by Deb Chaney (16” x 16”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new original artwork called The Matrix. Both the original artwork and prints are available for purchase.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the opening credits of the movie The Matrix, in which bright, neon green computer code rains down the screen. Letters and numbers continue to fall from the “computer sky”, and this effect inspired the alphanumeric-like marks on this painting.

Blue is the dominant colour in this painting – with hues like sky blue, azure, cerulean, cyan, and indigo – where it is the colour of both the sky and the sea. The painting is integrated with layers of bright gray and iridescent, lustrous silver, with hints of purples like indigo amethyst.

The square painting has a vertical composition, and words are written sideways in black with gestures and cursive text that flows up the canvas. The overall geometric patterns are reminiscent of Egyptian hieroglyphs in contrast to the more modern cursive text.

Original Painting “Stars Shining in the Daytime” Sold

Stars Shining in the Daytime by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the recent sale of my original abstract painting titled Stars Shining in the Daytime. It has been shipped to its new home in Liverpool, United Kingdom! I would like to extend a huge thank you and much love and gratitude to the collector, Ms. Tavriger.

About This Painting

This painting was created during a live demonstration for a workshop called “Creating Encaustic Effects with Acrylics”. It was specifically created to show transparent and translucent layering techniques with texture in order to share this with my students. Materials used include acrylic, collage, oil sticks, polymer mediums, and pencil.

In the photo below you can see where I’ve written on the back of the painting explaining how the layers were applied.

Back of Canvas of Stars Shining in the Daytime by Deb Chaney

With its beautiful layers of sacred geometry-inspired star patterns and playful typewritten text, this ethereal piece of abstract artwork possesses a magical and child-like energy. The soft pastel colours with white, beige gold, and turquoise create a gentle, spiritual atmosphere.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that are created for fun, with joy, and for creative practice.

New Original Artwork: Love Letter to Myself

Love Letter to Myself by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate a new original artwork called Love Letter to Myself becoming available for purchase. Its prints are also now available to order online.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the cultivation of self-love. I started by typing a love letter to myself and printing it out on very large paper. I then collaged and integrated the printed text with handwritten and painted words in multiple layers of the painting. It was created for and during an online workshop I conducted during the pandemic called “Mastering Mixed Media Abstract Painting”. More details on the process of creating this painting can be found in my previous blog post.

This painting has 2 main colours — ultramarine violet and yellow iron oxide. With hues such as lavender and periwinkle, light purple is the dominant colour. Spiritually, purple is associated with the crown shakra, which is the energy centre of the top of the body. The colour is associated with a sense of belonging and connection, and the knowledge that we are all divine.

Light yellow supports the purples with shades of amber and gold, while text, both typed and handwritten, is embedded within layers of the painting.
