The Background Behind My New Painting "The Wild Ride Of Life"

The Wild Ride of Life by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

This post is to announce that my new original abstract artwork, The Wild Ride of Life, is available for sale. You can also purchase high-quality prints of the painting in a variety of sizes on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This painting was created during those long days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During that time I was painting in a large warehouse complex of art studios. Unsurprisingly, the place was mostly vacated a lot of the time. And it was during that time that I basically went on my own personal rampage of creativity.

The Wild Ride of Life is one of the paintings that I produced during those days in my warehouse studio.

The painting’s colour palette consists of dark reds and blues contrasted with bright white and yellows and earth tones. The composition is an edgy and rough landscape that, although abstract, lends itself to a cityscape. At the same time, drips of paint travel up and down across the canvas, evoking the rollercoaster of the human experience.

The Wild Ride of Life is a mixed media on canvas painting measuring 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

New Original Artwork: Book Cover i

Book Cover i by Deb chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to announce that there are now prints available of my new original abstract artwork. High-quality prints of Book Cover i can now be purchased in a variety of sizes on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This part of a pair of Little Gems paintings that were created for a book I am in the process of writing. The book is about reclaiming my authentic creativity and what that really means for me and my artistic practice.

The 2 paintings were ideas I was playing around with for the cover. However, I have since chosen some different artwork – not these two! – for the cover of the book. But these 2 abstract paintings are nevertheless still beautiful and they have a flow and ethereal quality that I love!

Blending purples and blues with luminous areas of white creates a sense of clouds and oceans. A light, airy sense of floating is paired with fluid, wavy movements. While gritty layers of sand give it an earthy texture.

The mixed media painting measures 9” x 12” and is acrylic on paper.

My Abstract Artwork is Featured in Beyond Words Magazine

Tanlged Heart by Deb Chaney (23” x 30” x 1.5”)

Just back in August, I announced in a blog post that my abstract painting had been selected as the cover art for the September issue of Beyond Words Magzine. So I am thrilled to say that my artwork is once again featured in the magazine this month.

Beyond Words is an international monthly arts magazine with carefully curated visual artworks and literary pieces by unique and emerging creative talents. My latest contribution is on page 10 of Issue #40, published in October 2023.

Tangled Heart paired with a Poem by Dick Altman in Beyond Words #40

About This Painting

The original Tangled Heart painting is an acrylic mixed media collage on 300-pound cold press watercolour paper mounted on wood panel. It measures 23” x 30” x 1.5”.

Bold strokes of deep blues, yellows, grays, and black circle around and converge to create a harmonious yet dynamic composition. The play of light and shadow adds a palpable sense of depth and dimension, while scratches and crumpled creases create a sense of tension. It's like capturing a moment of chaos and harmony simultaneously, much like the complexities of life itself.

This painting is part of my Fragments of Life Series.  The series of abstract paintings is about how we often morph and fragment ourselves to survive the challenges and trauma we experienced growing up. We become people we are not – and do what we have to – in order to meet our needs. And the series is a healing journey about reclaiming those lost parts of ourselves, our fragments.

Each painting in the series represents a lesson from my spiritual journey. The painting process always helps me stay in the present moment – keeping with what’s real – and embracing, accepting, and loving it. We do this with the knowledge that we have the power and capacity to transform into the next version of ourselves.

New Original Artwork “Where (Forest and Beach) Become One”

Where (Forest and Beach) Become One by Deb Chaney (36” x 30’)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new abstract artwork. My original painting Where (Forest and Beach) Become One is now available for sale on Saatchi Art. The original painting is still available to collectors and you can also purchase high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

Before my (grown-up) daughter went travelling, she was living with me here on our beautiful little island, in the forest close to the ocean. We often shared these moments when what we needed most was – to just get out of the house! And this painting was inspired by one of our many on-island mini adventures.

One night we went to a beach that we adore and to get there we had to walk through the rainforest. It was dark outside and a million stars were shining down between the towering silhouettes of the trees. We stood on the beach, looking up through the treetops, and the place felt as though the ocean and the forest were becoming one.

This piece is designed to invite the viewer's imagination on a journey into nature. The abstract painting evokes a sense of landscape using a mix of earthy tones such as greens, blues, and browns, with hints of warm yellows and oranges.

The composition invites you to explore and contemplate the merging of these 2 distinct environments and encourages a sense of connection with the natural world – and the harmony to be found within.

We explore mark-making principles and practice hands-on painting to learn layering, etching, and removal techniques. On top of these, we delve into how to add depth, texture, and intrigue to your artwork.

Finally, we discover the 3 Wows – what makes a great abstract painting and how to know when your painting is finished. You will leave this course inspired to continue your artistic journey, full of ideas and principles to explore and implement.

Dates: Mondays, Oct 16 to Dec 4 (8 weeks)
Time: 6:30-8 pm
Where: Gabriola Recreation Office, Gabriola Island

Mail Art Exhibition and Fundraiser at the Richmond Art Gallery

Aaa by Deb Chaney (5” x 7”)

I’m excited to announce that a few pieces of my abstract artwork will be displayed in Richmond,  B.C. beginning this week. They were created for a mail art exhibit at Metro Vancouver’s Richmond Art Gallery (RAG). The art show, Collecting & Reassembling, was organized in tandem with and accompanies the Classification Crisis exhibit by award-winning Yukon-based artist and poet Sonja Ahlers.

Mail art – also called postal and correspondence art – is an artistic movement focused on sharing small artworks through the postal service. In keeping with this, artists from around the world contributed postcard-size works of art for the exhibition.

Based on the principles of equal, one-to-one collaboration between artists, mail art has become a worldwide cultural movement for artists to share visual art, poetry, or any other artistic form through the postal system.

Richmond Art Gallery

The open call to artists for this exhibit was inspired by the zines, chapbooks, collages, and mixed media works of Sonja Ahlers. Artists responded with their own stories, images, and ephemera into postcard-sized artworks which were then mailed to the Richmond Art Gallery.

The exhibit is coordinated by local artist and RAG Public Program Coordinator, Kathy Tycholis. As it’s also a fundraiser, there will be a live auction a couple of weeks after the show has concluded.

Collecting & Reassembling: International Mail Art Exhibition And Fundraiser

Exhibit: September 9th – November 5, 2023

Live Auction: November 18, 2023

About These Paintings

These 3 small postcard-size artworks were created specifically for the International Mail Art Exhibition. The theme of the show – and hence the theme driving their creation – is the idea of collecting and reassembling.

With this in mind, I collected materials already in my studio – such as stained papers, vinyl, and glitter letters. I played around with them, using gel medium and acrylic paint to adhere them to the paper canvas and bring the pieces together.

The colours of all 3 abstract paintings are bright blues, greens, and gold, as well as white and black. They have collaged cutout letters as well as handwritten words in cursive. Each small painting is 5” x 7” mixed media on paper.

UPDATE. November 2023

An update from the International Mail Art Exhibition and Fundraiser from the Richmond Art Gallery.

First of all, thank you for your generosity.  Our online auction raised over $1900 ! It was a busy, fun-filled night and we are just getting the final packages of purchased Mail Art in the post to their new homes.

With almost 300 artists in this exhibition it was a LOT for people to view and to choose from, so we are not surprised that not everything sold.

However, we have decided to keep the remaining artworks up in our gallery and online for an additional auction, in the hopes that all the artworks find a good home.

We now have 130 artists still represented online and in the Richmond Art Gallery, and they will be hosted at an online auction until the evening of December 31, 2023. Please have a look at our online auction, and share it with friends. All works start at $5.00 CDN and go up in small increments, so this has proven a really affordable way to start collecting some art!

The new auction site is here: https://app.charityauctionstoday.com/auctions/raga-mail-art-auction-part-2-40355

And if you want to see the entire show, it is online here: https://app.charityauctionstoday.com/auctions/RAGA-Mail-Art-Exhibition-Fundraiser-38022

Original Artwork “(Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life” Sold

(Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life by Deb Chaney

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original artwork, (Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life. First and foremost, I would like to thank the art collector for choosing to add this abstract painting to their private collection. You are deeply appreciated and I am so grateful for your patronage.

Secondly, I would like to thank Free Spirit Gallery here on Gabriola Island for facilitating the sale of this artwork.

About This Painting

This painting is a mixed media abstract painting on paper using acrylics, ink, and elements of collage with printed text and paper. With a dynamic and vibrant composition full of motion and energy, the many layers and textures add depth and complexity to the piece.

The colour palette consists of bold hues such as deep blues and dark greens. These contrast with warm yellows, fiery oranges, and bright swaths of white. The colors blend and interact with each other, forming an organic and harmonious composition that invites exploration and contemplation.

Bold brushstrokes reveal a sense of spontaneity and intuition. Swirling lines, drips, and gestural movements add to the painting’s sense of movement and energy.

This little painting is part of my Little Gems Series, which I use for testing new techniques and practicing old ones. While the original has been sold, prints in a variety of sizes and canvases are available through Saatchi Art online.

Paintings Donated to Gabriola Island's Annual Salmon BBQ

Cultivate Your Goodness by Deb Chaney (4” x 6”)

Last summer I donated a painting to the wonderful Gabriola Island Community Hall to be auctioned off at its annual Salmon BBQ fundraiser. I absolutely love our beautiful, vibrant Gabriola community, and I feel so fortunate and am so grateful to live here. As my way of giving back, this year I am donating 3 paintings to the silent auction.

For this year’s auction, I created 3 little canvas pieces that work together but can stand alone specifically for this event. Each abstract painting is 4" x 6" x 1 1/4".

About the Paintings

These precious creations are a heartfelt expression of my love, gratitude, and passion for the enchanting Gabriola Island. It all began when I stumbled upon a newspaper clipping in The Sounder, highlighting a salmon barbecue event and soliciting donations. Filled with excitement, I embarked on a creative journey by incorporating snippets from The Sounder, using them as a foundation for my paintings.

As serendipity would have it, I also discovered a collection of maps, left on a stand in a free bookstore on our street. These maps, adorned with captivating images of the ocean and neighboring islands, felt perfectly fitting.

With deep chromium oxide green paint and dashes of blue, I carefully infused the canvases, allowing them to dry and set the stage for what was to come. Drawing inspiration from my tranquil forest walks on the island, I meticulously crafted silhouette images using organic materials I had gathered along the way. Each stroke and placement was guided by a profound sense of connection to the surrounding nature.

To bring everything together, a final coat of clear gloss adds a protective seal, reinforcing the unity of all the elements.

These creations are not only a gift to our community, but also a testament to the kindness, support, and profound sense of belonging I experience through life on this island. With sincere appreciation, I extend my deepest thanks.

The paintings up for auction are:

  • Cultivate Your Goodness (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

  • Grow your Kindness (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

  • Allow Your Inner Wild (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

New Original Artwork "Yearning Warmth and Light"

Yearning Warmth and Light by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to announce and celebrate finishing a new abstract painting. Yearning Warmth and Light has recently become available for sale on Saatchi Art. You can currently still purchase the original painting or choose to order high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

This is the second of the 3 spiritually-inspired paintings that I mentioned in last week’s post. recently created. The newly created small paintings are the result of my trying to figure out how to go about creating my new large-scale Drishti Painting Series. These small practice pieces have helped me work out how to integrate sacred geometry marks using textures and layers.

Whereas the first painting last week, Turn the Lights On, was a canvas full of vivid pinks, Yearning Warmth and Light is a verdurous palette of greens and blues. Viridescent layers of olive, emerald, and lime greens combine with aquamarine, light blues, and splashes of white.

Textured sacred geometry is repeated up and down and across the canvas with stencils of the Flower of Life, creating movement and depth, as though the canvas itself has been cut away.

The choice of gentle greens and blues is intended to create a sense of calm and be a nourishing, grounding influence.

This contemporary mixed-media painting is part of my Little Gems Series.

New Original Artwork “Turn The Lights On”

Turn The Lights On by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new abstract artwork. Turn The Lights On is now available for sale on Saatchi Art. You can currently buy the original painting or high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

Fresh out of the studio, this is one of 3 new spiritually inspired artworks that I recently created. The small paintings were inspired by the process of figuring out how to create my new large-scale Drishti Painting Series. I have been using these small practice pieces to work out the integration of sacred geometry marks using textures and layers.

A gamut of vivid pinks, including magenta, rose, and salmon, are spotted with dimples of yellow and gold, while textured layers of sacred geometry create mesmerizing depths to lead your eye around the canvas.

Concentric circles and stencils of the Flower of Life are repeated across the canvas on multiple layers, floating above light yellows, blues, and whites far in the background.

The bright pinks are uplifting and exuberant in creating this loving, heartfelt piece of art. This contemporary mixed media painting is part of my Little Gems Series.

New Original Artwork "He Sailed to Platea"

He Sailed to Platea by Deb Chaney (11'“ x 15”)

This post is to celebrate the availability of my abstract painting now available for sale. You can buy both the original painting and high-quality prints (in various sizes) online through Saatchi Art. In a recent post, I mentioned that I had just found some paintings of mine from 2019 that had not been catalogued. He Sailed to Platea is one of the artworks that was among those paintings.

When I came upon the 3 paintings, I immediately set about photographing them for the website in order to make them available to share with you. This is the final painting in the trio and, like the two before it, He Sailed to Platea can now be seen for the first time since its creation 4 years ago!

These newly found abstract artworks are now all officially part of my Little Gems Series.

About This Painting

My Little Gems Series is an ongoing collection of paintings that start out as practice pieces. I use them to try out new ideas and techniques as well as to practice old ones. The passion and enthusiasm and love for art that I feel in the studio is expressed in every piece I create. And all of this energy is passed on through the canvas as my gift to you.

He Sailed to Platea is a mixed media collage painting measuring 11” x 15”. That makes it a little bigger than my other Little Gems, which are typically 9” x 12”. Like the other 2 pieces of art in this newly found trio of paintings, its inspiration comes from the collaging of old books and the beautiful tissue paper of dressmaking.

Sharing the same colour palette with the first 2 paintings, He Sailed to Platea is composed of yellow and ochre, many shades of grey, and a striking line of turquoise that evokes a river. The earth tones, bright blues, and hints of organic elements further create a connection to the natural world.

A dynamic arrangement of geometric shapes, lines, and pencil strokes evokes a sense of movement and energy that emanates throughout the entire piece. And typed pages torn from old books are collaged with layers of acrylic paint, charcoal, gesso, and pastels. Like ancient texts, the pages are aged with yellows and browns, inviting us to explore the past.

New Original Artwork "The Command Was Given"

The Command Was Given by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

This post is to celebrate one of my original abstract artworks becoming available for sale. The original is for sale online through Saatchi Art and so are high-quality prints in a variety of sizes. This painting, The Command Was Given, was among the paintings that I recently discovered, as I mentioned in last week’s post.

As noted last week, I found a few prints that I painted way back in 2019. The abstract paintings are all part of my Little Gems Series, although they’d never been documented and catalogued. Therefore, I promptly photographed them and made them available to share with you. This is the second of 3 paintings which, just like the previous one, is now being seen for the first time since I painted it 4 years ago!

About This Painting

My ongoing Little Gems Series is a collection of paintings that begin as practice pieces. I use them to hone my skills as well as explore and try out new techniques and ideas. Each painting in the series is bursting with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio. And all of that energy and positivity is infused in every piece of artwork – which becomes my gift to you!

This mixed media collage painting is slightly bigger than most of my Little Gems, which usually measure 9” x 12”. Just like the first piece in this trio of paintings, it measures 11” x 15” and is also inspired by collaging old books and the beautiful tissue paper used in dressmaking.

This painting has the same colour palette as the first painting, One of The Originals, although the ochre, yellow, and turquoise are more prominent. Pages cut and torn from old books are collaged with layers of acrylic paint, charcoal, gesso, and pastels. Gesture marks, scribbles, and geometric shapes encourage the viewer to explore every inch of the canvas. The typed pages are weathered and aged, creating a curiosity about the past.

New Original Artwork “One of The Originals”

One of the Originals by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

This post is to celebrate a piece of my original artwork becoming newly available along with high-quality prints. I recently discovered One of The Originals along with some other prints that I painted back in 2019. They are part of my Little Gems collection but had yet to be documented. So, after photographing them, I’m excited to share them with you. This is the first of 3 paintings, which can now be seen for the first time since its creation!

About This Painting

As mentioned, this painting is part of my perennial Little Gems Series. These small paintings are my practice pieces which I use to explore and test new techniques and ideas, while also honing and practicing old ones. Every painting is infused with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio when creating art. And that energy is imbued into the painting – my gift to you!

Measuring 11” x 15”, this mixed media painting is a little bit bigger than the typical 9” x 12” size of most of my Little Gems. It is inspired by the process of collaging old books and the beautiful tissue paper used in dressmaking.

Collaged pages of old books mingle with rich layers of acrylic paint, charcoal, gesso, and pastel to create a visually dynamic surface that invites expiration and contemplation. Distressed surfaces alongside striking marks and scratches juxtapose more curious and playful looping pencil strokes and circles.

The book pages are aged with yellow and ochre paints to create a sense of antiquity, while other colours include splashes of vibrant turquoise, patches of black, and a lot of grey and white.

New Original Artwork “AFXo”

AFXo by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new piece of original abstract artwork titled AFXo. The original is available for sale along with high-quality prints, both of which can be ordered online at Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This painting is part of my ongoing Little Gems Series. The small paintings begin as small studies in exploring new ideas and techniques while also practicing old ones. Each Little Gem is infused with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio when creating my artwork. All of that energy is imbued into the painting and becomes my gift to you!

The painting features a harmonious blend of materials and techniques. Bold brushstrokes contrast with delicate drops, swooping gestures, and circles to create a sense of motion, evoking circling and diving birds.

Rich blues and reds intermingle with earthy neutrals of sepia and beige, while thick, dark layers juxtapose a lighter, watery background. Finally, sand and etching marks create added texture and depth in this spiritual work.

Original Artwork "The Lost Poem" Sold

The Lost Poem by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract artwork, The Lost Poem. It was recently purchased by Ms. Jackson of Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks and appreciation that you have chosen to add my painting to your collection.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the idea of old writings – texts and books and poems – being lost for long periods of time and how they are often full of ancient wisdom and insights. When we finally discover these lost writings, it is like striking cultural gold.

The abstract painting features a rich tapestry of colours, textures, and expressive brushstrokes that come together harmoniously on the canvas. The main colours are gold and blue, with many tones and hues of each. Exploring the canvas, you will discover azure, cobalt, cerulean, turquoise, and more, contrasting with amber, lemon, and other yellows.

Layers of acrylic paint have been applied to multiple layers of collage with pages from old books, textured corrugated cardboard, and gold leaf, resulting in a complex and multidimensional surface.

Original Artwork “Full Moon Frog Pond” Sold

Full Moon Frog Pond by Deb Chaney (8” x 10”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of original artwork from my Full Moon Frog Pond series of paintings. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Mrs. Bev McNicoll of British Columbia, Canada for her purchase of the painting Full Moon Frog Pond #02-003. I’m so excited that you love this piece and I’m eager to see the frame you choose and where you place this unique, little deckled edge painting in your home. Thank you for becoming a collector.

About This Painting

This painting is part of a series in which I collaborated with composer Gregory Rosa to create a special edition collection of “pieces of the pond”. A few of these paintings were made available with a limited edition Full Moon Frog Pond CD. You can sample the music that accompanies the art on Gregory Rosa’s website here: http://www.gregoryrosa.com/

The painting’s colour palette consists of many hues of green – from dark to light to mossy to turquoise. The grassy greens give a sense of a verdant marsh or pond, while the large, textured blue-green circle emerging from the upper corner elicits a closeup of a frog’s eye.

Its many layers add a tactile quality to the painting, creating an engaging visual experience. The composition is rich with depth and complexity, inviting the eye to explore every corner of the canvas and see it in different ways. For example, bold straight lines of black ink alongside lighter squiggles elicit an aerial view far removed from the closeup perspective.
