Which City Do You See in This Painting?

Looking For A Place To Land by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I'm thrilled to share that my original abstract painting Looking For A Place To Land was sold and added to somebody’s art collection.

I would first like to congratulate Sensei Anthony Evangelista and your beautiful wife on your recent marriage. And thank you for becoming collectors of this original Deb Chaney artwork. I am honoured in your choosing this painting and am truly grateful for your support.

About this painting

This painting was inspired by flying in an airplane over a city and looking down at all the tiny cars and roads below. You are descending through the clouds, heading toward this place you either call home or are just visiting.

This contemporary artwork’s colour palette consists of shades of turquoise, rusty and yellowish earth tones, and black paint with collaged layers of gold leaf, corrugated paper, and book pages.

Lines of varying thickness crisscross and curve around the canvas, offering a bird’s-eye view of the urban landscape below.

About my Little Gems Series

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series of pieces that I create while practicing techniques, teaching art lessons, and for my own fun and creative exploration. I use them to hone my skills and to explore new techniques and ideas.

Each painting in the series is bursting with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio. And all that energy and positivity is infused in every piece of artwork – which becomes my gift to you!

You can see more abstract paintings in the series here at Saatchi Art.

The Magical Story Behind Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I’m excited to announce the completion of a new abstract artwork and that the original painting is now available for purchase. High-quality prints are also now ready and can be added to your art collection through Saatchi Art

The story behind this painting

This painting was inspired by a beautiful and personal memory of mine.

It was a magical afternoon on the ferry heading over to the city. I was with myself on a soul-rejuvenating "artist date"—otherwise known as a mission to get Thai food. (The small selection of restaurants on the island where I live sadly lacks ethnic cuisine.)

It was stormy outside as waves crashed against the ferry. And in the distance, the mountains were covered with snow. It was so beautiful to be on the boat and simply enjoying the ride.

In the background I heard the distinctive introductory chords to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. I turned around and immediately connected with the man playing the song. We sang the entire song together while he played his guitar. It was a magical, beautiful moment, and I will treasure it always.

About this painting

The colour palette of this abstract painting is a frothy white with a swatch of dark and light blues, ranging from cobalt to hints of pale turquoise. Impressions of a traditional wooden-spoked ship’s wheel repeat on layers throughout the painting.

Strokes of black create a signature of sorts, followed by 11 short vertical lines counting off in a row across the bottom of the painting.

The original acrylic-on-paper contemporary abstract painting measures 9” x 12”.

More Than A Splash Of Colour With Wearable Art

I would like to take this opportunity to send my love and gratitude to Ms. Hélène Bourgie Dubois of Mont-Tremblant, Québec for her recent purchases. She bought several wearable art pieces with my artwork as their featured design.

Thank you!

My collection of wearable art is growing

My collection on Le Galeriste now includes over 200 pieces of wearable art. From skirts and leggings to shirts and scarves, you can be covered from head to toe.

You can browse by item type or see what’s available for my specific pieces of original abstract artwork. Browse through the gallery below for just a few examples of the items available.

About Le Galeriste Arte-a-Porter

Le Galeriste is the fusion of art and high fashion. The wearable art gallery showcases exclusive works of art from some of the world’s most respected artists, produced on high-end clothing made in Montreal (Canada) in limited and numbered editions.

Le Galeriste’s curators work with the gallery’s signed artists on a selection of artworks and set the artistic intent of the collaboration. The designers then place the art on the wearable canvasses (dress, blouse, button-down shirt, etc.).

The creations are grouped into bimonthly exhibitions presented to the Collectors via their online gallery, on Instagram, and on their Facebook page.

Artists Connected By More Than Just An Exhibit

I am excited to announce my participation in an upcoming collaborative art exhibit. And there’s something special and unique about this group exhibit—more than just sharing gallery space.

The Colour Connection group art show is with fellow creative Canadian artists Alini Garcia, Tamara Grand, and Roman Rozumnyj. But it also features a truly collective artwork.

About The Colour Connection group art show

In addition to the art exhibit featuring individual artwork by each artist, there will be one collaborative painting in which we all take turns adding and removing marks and colours.

The painting started with me, then I mailed it to Tamara, who is based in Port Moody. After working on the painting, she mailed it to Roman in West Vancouver. When he finished his additions (and subtractions), he sent it to Alini in North Vancouver.

The final collaborative Colour Connection piece measures 20” x 20” and will be on exhibit at the show. Each of us shared our contributions on our respective Instagram pages (listed below) to follow the progress and process of this collaborative art piece.

The Colour Connection times & location

The art exhibit is in West Vancouver’s Millennium Park and runs for most of February and into March.

There will be a welcoming and relaxed reception during gallery hours where visitors can meet the artists, view the work, enjoy some light refreshments, and mingle. There will also be an Artist Talk Livestream which anyone can watch on YouTube.

The gallery will present an artist talk live on its YouTube channel. Artists will get to talk about their work, inspirations, process & take questions from viewers. You can participate from anywhere, as it will be a Zoom meeting between us streamed on YouTube. The talk will then be available on the gallery’s YouTube channel.

Which One of These Paintings Has a Hidden Bridge?

Heart Opener by Deb Chaney (36” x 48” x 1.5”)

This post is to celebrate my continued partnership with Van Gogh Designs. I have 4 original pieces of abstract contemporary artwork featured in their beautiful showroom in White Rock, British Columbia.

About these paintings

These original abstract paintings are on exhibit in the showroom, and the originals and prints are available for purchase.

The Writing Is In The Air - Gabriola is a watery blend of bluish-green, black, and white. This ink on canvas painting measures 40” x 30” x 0.5”.

Red Landscape has an earth-tone colour palette of umber, brownish-yellow, and a bit of grassy green. Layered in horizontal strips, the colours create a sense of depth as though looking across an autumn field beneath a sky of white and grey. The white outlines of a suspension bridge can be seen through the “fog”. It measures 48” x 36” x 1.5”.

Connection & Belonging has an earthy colour palette of light greens, yellows, and gold. Layers of sand give it texture while ruler-straight pencil lines connect numerous dots around the painting like a map, creating a sense of connection through cartography. This pencil-on-canvas painting measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

Heart Opener has a colour palette of striking pink under harsh layers of dark red bordered by deep purple and midnight blue. Bold and aggressive strokes and drips of bright white stand out against the painting’s dark foundation. This acrylic on canvas painting measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

Can You Feel the Love and Joy in These Paintings?

Love by Deb chaney (9’ x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of 2 of my original abstract paintings. I am absolutely honoured to be mailing these contemporary artworks to San Diego, California.

Their new owner is writer, speaker, and creativity workshop facilitator Jill Badonsky. Her book, The Nine Modern Day Muses (and a Bodyguard), is a wonderfully useful guide for creatives.

Jill was my first mentor in the creative process and is the creator of the Kaizen-Muse creativity coaching program with Dr. Robert Maurer. I am beyond thrilled and excited that my paintings will be added to to art collection.

Joy by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

About these paintings

Both of these abstract paintings are acrylic on canvas. As you can tell by their titles, they share a common emotional tone and theme.

Love is the more colourful of the 2 paintings, with striking squares of deep yellow and bold lines of bright red. Purple and white round out the colour palette with a flower and “love” playfully handwritten on the painting.

Joy has a lighter, more carefree colour palette of white, light yellow-orange, and peach layered over bits of dark red. The canvas is mostly white, with strokes through the paint creating an X's and O's board. A string of O’s loops along the bottom, while a larger one breaks the rules and sits upon the line between 2 empty squares. The word “JOY” is is stenciled in black in the bottom corner of the painting.

These paintings are part of my Litte Gems Series, pieces I create during my painting practice, when I’m teaching art lessons, and for my own fun and creative exploration.

Are You Longing for Petals in the Winter?

Longing for petals in the winter by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

This post is to announce that one of my original abstract paintings is now available for sale along with high-quality prints in various sizes. As the title of the post suggests, the painting is called Longing for petals in the winter

About this painting

This mixed-media abstract painting consists of acrylic paint, gesso, collaged book pages in English and Chinese, and calligraphy.

Look carefully within the collaged text of this painting and you will see at least 3 things: a poem, a page from a dictionary, and the title page from a mathematics book.

Something I love to do is collage in old book pages, poems, and dictionary pages, and then find a word or sentence to inspire and guide the painting. In this case, it also became the title of the painting.

The colour palette of this contemporary abstract expressionist painting is dark greens, white, and light grey with a few areas of dark greys and black. The verdant forest green is trapped beneath the whiteness of the snow, while strong gestural strokes add a sense of upward motion striving to emerge.

This painting measures 11” x 15” and is part of my Little Gems Series, which I use for testing new techniques and practicing old ones. High-quality reproductions in a variety of sizes and canvases are available through Saatchi Art online.
