About this painting

The colour palette of this textured contemporary abstract artwork is a sea of greens and blues. Lighter tones of mossy greens, cobalt blues, and turquoise are surrounded by near-black blues.

Splotches of burgundy red appear sparingly beneath the darker layers.

Part of something bigger

This painting is a small practice piece for the large format series I’m working on called The Drishti Paintings. This is in preparation for a solo exhibit I am calling The Drishti Experience. The exhibit runs Nov 2024–Jan 2025.

These small study pieces help me figure out the paintings' colours, layers, and the interplay with the sacred geometry flower of life symbol, so that when I get to the big paintings I have confidence and clarity for my creative approach.

The underlying question that inspires this series is: How can I Iive in a frequency of well-being?

I am fascinated by well-being in a world where we tend to focus on what is wrong. As we cheer on our personal “trauma trophies”, we focus on our troubles, challenges, and chagrins. This leads me to wonder: 

What happens when we focus on what is right? 

What is good here? 

How do we find lasting health, happiness, joy, and wellness? 

The visual foundation of this series embodies the core principles I have learned from living in the frequency of my own well-being and continues to evolve as I do. This one-of-a-kind artwork is acrylic on paper and measures 9” x 12”.

How this project began...

Before I get into why I chose to name this upcoming painting exhibit The Drishti Experience - Capturing the Frequency of My Well-Being, we’re going to go back in time, and if you are curious, I’d like to share with you the story of when and where the idea came to me.

In October 2015, I was invited to give an artists’ talk at the Vancouver Arts Colloquium Society. This was when and where the idea came to me; it was from a really good question one of the audience members asked me after my presentation.

For the engagement, I brought a number of 23” x 30” abstract paintings on 300 pound cold press watercolor paper, from my Fragments of Life Series to show and tell. I used the paintings and their titles to share how I felt that making this art had re-taught me how to be in the world and start to feel good again. For this to make sense, we have to go even further back in time.

On July 8th, 2002, on my 28th birthday, after four days of labor,  The Universe gave me the greatest gift of my life. I won’t pretend it was easy or comfortable, however, sometimes the most challenging experiences we go through offer us the most substantial gifts.

My son Max was born and died that day.  He had congenital defects that were not detected prior to birth, so even though he came out alive and kicking, a beautiful, perfect little baby, his lungs were the size of lima beans. I watched the medical team try to resuscitate him, but nothing could be done. This little angel came and went, transforming me for evermore.

The next year, my daughter Ruth was born, and subsequently came the heedless gifts of divorce, depression, and delusion. I thought I could handle being a single parent, do it all on my own, but several years later, after nights of anxiety attacks, and days of planning my exit, I was so exhausted and mentally unwell that I was hospitalized. I then lost custody of my daughter. 

I didn’t know it back then, but I was existing at the very bottom of the frequencies of emotion: I lived in shame. The experience was a combination of feelings of guilt, grief, and fear.  This is important to mention because this project is about capturing the frequency of my well-being, so we need to bring the concept of frequency into the discussion in order to understand how it all plays together. At that time, I felt such a level of indignity around all of this happening and my being unable to ‘handle it’ that life felt unbearable. The one thing that brought me solace and glimpses of joy was making art. And I had a deep and burning desire to get well, but no idea yet how.

Back to 2015: During the Q&A part of the artist’s talk, a woman raised her hand and said that from her perspective she observed someone who had done a tremendous amount of healing. (Thank you). She then asked me, What did I feel was the key component that helped me heal from mental illness? It was exactly at that moment that the idea of the Drishti Painting Series came to me, because my answer was the definition of Drishti.

Drishti comes from the Sanskrit word meaning to focus the mind. I realized then that my focus on my decision to do whatever it takes to get well so that I could get my daughter back was the reason I was healing. I became aware, in the moment of this woman asking me her question, that the power of focus is absolutely key in the process. I also realized that many other components that had helped me find my well-being were also imbued in my paintings.

I am excited to share the other elements that I feel played an important role in my healing journey, in my later writings, as these discoveries are very much where things get fun and we move up the ladder of frequency, into courage, acceptance and finally into flow…

We all go through challenges in life; this is an inescapable part of human existence. It is what we do with them and whether or not we let them ‘keep us down’ or if we choose and allow them to teach and transform us. I made a decision to get well and had my practice of making art alongside me to help and guide me. This  is why I am so excited to create this series of paintings and share them with you. To celebrate positive possibilities, healing,  and well-being.

I’m delighted to share that my original abstract painting The Delight of Words and Paint iii of iii has been sold. 

I am so honoured and thrilled just knowing that it is now part of someone’s personal art collection.

About this painting

As you can probably tell by the title, this original artwork is part of a series. It is the third of 3 paintings, 2 of which have now been sold.

Working with collage, acrylic paint, and new stencils inspired this process. An array of shades of light and dark greens dominate this abstract painting. Along with photocopied cutouts, strips of pages have been cut from books and collaged around the canvas.

This contemporary art painting is part of my Little Gems Series. These pieces are inspired by practice and play. Particularly the interplay between collage words and paint. These pieces are my practice and are so much fun to create.

The original painting measures 9” x 12” and is a mixed media artwork of acrylics and collaged book pages on paper.

How I named this painting

The word drishti comes from Sanskrit. It is often used in yoga practice to refer to a single spot for the yoga practitioner to focus on in order to maintain their balance. 

I have called my series of abstract artworks The Drishti Paintings and I created them to invite the viewer on a visual journey inwards. They draw us into our own alignment, re-connecting to the love we have inside and thereby re-connecting to the drishti within ourselves.

About this painting

This painting is a practice piece for a large-format series of paintings that I have been working on since 2021 and will be showing later this year. 

There are several inspirational factors that are based on the key elements I found to be most helpful in my personal healing journey. These are Space, Focus, and Connection. Each of these concepts has been applied visually to this painting and each of them is in this new series.

The series and the paintings are evolving as I go, which you can see in the evolution of these small practice pieces. I am learning a lot in my journey of exploring, painting, and being in the frequency of my well-being.

The colour palette of this dark painting consists of black, blues, and purple and orange and red. Stencils of sacred geometry repeat throughout the painting, which is a common element in the series.

This one-of-a-kind mixed-media artwork is acrylic and sand on paper and measures 9” x 12”.

About this painting

Vibrant colours dance across the canvas, bursting with energy in a symphony of blue and green hues. The large, bold strokes of colour pulsate with life as they lead your eye around the artwork.

The title of this playful and energetic painting was inspired by the lyrics of the song Piece of my Heart, which was a huge hit for Janis Joplin. You can hear her version of the song and follow along with the lyrics in the YouTube video below.

This contemporary abstract painting is the second in my series of 3 paintings under this title. I talked about the first painting, The Universe is Your Sanctuary i, in a post last summer and I feel like it’s a good time for a follow-up.

How I chose the title of this painting

The painting evokes not only the depths of space, but the tranquility found within its vast quietude. It is a beautiful, wonderous place to feel safe and secure.

About this painting

Looking at the painting is like peering deep into space–as though looking through the Hubble Telescope. With mesmerizing galactic vibes, a feeling of celestial wonder and the massiveness of space radiates from the canvas. 

Stencils of sacred geometry repeat across the painting’s central expanse of black like a galaxy full of stars. The striking black-and-white composition is layered with bright teal and magenta. The harmonious colours evoke the serenity and tranquility of celestial bodies and the infiniteness of the universe.

I’m happy to share that my original abstract painting Happy was sold. I’m truly honoured and thrilled that it is now part of someone’s art collection.

About this painting

This painting was originally created when my 15 year old daughter, Ruthie– who was enthusiastically re-decorating her room at the time–used the colour palette in this painting as her theme. 

She had initially asked to borrow a painting of mine that I had in inventory. But after looking through my paintings, nothing quite fit the bill for the colour and size specifications that she desired. Therefore, I did what I do. 

I painted. 

And I created this painting to match the theme of her room decor at the time. She of course grew up, as children do, and changed the colour palette and design of her room. As a result, the painting ended up back in my inventory. And due to that, it was recently purchased by a collector here on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The original square painting measures 24” x 24” and is a mixed media artwork composed of gold leaf, sand, acrylics, and collaged book pages and cut-out letters.

The colour palette is largely white, with gold and greyish turquoise. Recurring patterns create a flow throughout the painting as swooping gestural brushstrokes move your eye around the canvas.

The colour palette of soft pastels blends seamlessly with earthy tones, creating a harmonious balance. Hints of gold leaf shimmer like celestial rays, symbolizing hope and enlightenment, help make this a thought-provoking and uplifting piece of artwork.

The central motif—a partially open door—is a powerful symbol of opportunity, transition, and revelation. The door stands slightly ajar, suggesting that there are infinite possibilities waiting beyond.

Independent and Connected Paintings: An Artistic Challenge

Free to Flow by Deb Chaney (36” x 24”)

It’s always good to challenge oneself. And I would like to share a fun challenge I gave myself a while ago.

The exercise resulted in a series of 8 abstract paintings called Free to Flow and they are now available on Saatchi Art.

Getting things started

I received an email from Saatchi Online Gallery recently asking me to update my inventory. So I went through each one of my paintings on the website and updated information about my artwork. 

I undertook the project with the intention of bringing some new magic to my collection. And I think the magic that I experienced was seeing my artwork with fresh eyes. It truly gave me a deeper appreciation of what I’ve created.

A small series study and exploration

This was an artistic experiment I did years ago and it was done as an exercise to stretch myself creatively and challenge myself as a painter.

What I did was give myself a set of 3 parameters to push both my mind and my painting abilities. The rules for this artistic study were as follows:

First, I was going to paint a series of 8 individual paintings and each one had to stand alone on its own.

However, all 8 paintings also had to connect together.

And finally, I limited myself to a monochromatic colour palette, meaning 1 colour plus black and white.

There are 8 paintings in total and they’re collectively and individually called Free to Flow. I have combined all the paintings together for the feature image in this week’s blog post. This shows you what the full image would look like if you were to get all of them together.

How I chose the title of this painting

If you look closely within the collaged text of this painting, you will see a page of words from the dictionary which includes one of the words in the title. 

Something I really love doing is to collage old book pages, poems, and dictionary pages and then find a word or sentence to inspire and guide the painting. In the case of this particular contemporary artwork, it also became the title of the painting.

About this abstract painting

This mixed-media abstract painting on paper is made with acrylic paint, pencil, gesso, and collaged book pages.

The colour palette of this contemporary abstract expressionist painting is a vibrant ocean blue with large areas of pure black, grey, and white. Strong gestural strokes create a sense of movement. In the lower-right corner, a soaring bird stenciled in black—with its own distinct space to fly—juxtaposes the strictly regimented pages of a dictionary.

Collaborative painting for donation to The Woods

The Colour Connection (20" x 20" x 1.5) by Alini Garcia, Deb Chaney, Tamara Grand, Roman Rozumnyj

This past Sunday marked the end of The Colour Connection group art show that I was part of. It ran for about a month at the Silk Purse Arts Centre in West Vancouver.

The central feature of the art exhibit was a collaborative artwork painted by myself and 3 other West Coast Canadian artists. You can also read an earlier post for more about the exhibit, but I’ll cover much of it below.

About The Colour Connection art show

The exhibit was held in West Vancouver’s Millennium Park and ran from February 7 to March 3, 2024. There was a Meet the Artists event in early February as well as an Artist Talk Livestream, which is now available on the gallery’s YouTube channel.

In addition to showing individual pieces by each artist, the show featured one collaborative painting done by all of us. And that is the painting I’d like to focus on here.

Donating the painting to The Woods

The final painting was donated to The Woods Arts & Wellness, a non-profit charity that supports mental health through art and nature. You can learn more about the organization (and make a donation) on The Woods website.

The process of collaborative painting

I had the painting–or rather the blank canvas–to begin the collaboration, then I mailed it to Tamara in Port Moody. After her additions she mailed it to Roman in West Vancouver, who made his contributions then sent it to Alini in North Vancouver.

The final painting, The Colour Connection (20" x 20" x 1.5”) is mixed media on canvas and created by Alini Garcia, Deb Chaney, Tamara Grand, and Roman Rozumnyj.

About the painting

The colour palette of this abstract artwork is primarily an uplifting, bright yellow over white, with watery brushstrokes of black. The mixed media artwork is acrylic, water soluble pencil, gesso, and sand on paper.

This painting captures the energy of our third chakra, which is the energy centre about owning our personal power. The affirmation for this region of our body surrounding our naval is “I am powerful”. 

The painting is called Re-Claiming because I painted this while working a day job in the paint department at our local hardware store. When my 3-day workweek ended, I would rest, and then find myself consciously re-claiming my creative practice and getting back into the studio.

This painting is in support of you re-claiming your own creative flow.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series of pieces that I create while practicing techniques, teaching art lessons, and for my own fun and creative exploration. I use them to hone my skills and to explore new techniques and ideas.

Looking For A Place To Land by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I'm thrilled to share that my original abstract painting Looking For A Place To Land was sold and added to somebody’s art collection.

About this painting

This painting was inspired by flying in an airplane over a city and looking down at all the tiny cars and roads below. You are descending through the clouds, heading toward this place you either call home or are just visiting.

This contemporary artwork’s colour palette consists of shades of turquoise, rusty and yellowish earth tones, and black paint with collaged layers of gold leaf, corrugated paper, and book pages.

Lines of varying thickness crisscross and curve around the canvas, offering a bird’s-eye view of the urban landscape below.

The Magical Story Behind Romeo and Juliet

The story behind this painting

This painting was inspired by a beautiful and personal memory of mine. 

It was a magical afternoon on the ferry heading over to the city. I was with myself on a soul-rejuvenating "artist date"—otherwise known as a mission to get Thai food. (The small selection of restaurants on the island where I live sadly lacks ethnic cuisine.) 

It was stormy outside as waves crashed against the ferry. And in the distance, the mountains were covered with snow. It was so beautiful to be on the boat and simply enjoying the ride. 

In the background I heard the distinctive introductory chords to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. I turned around and immediately connected with the man playing the song. We sang the entire song together while he played his guitar. It was a magical, beautiful moment, and I will treasure it always.

About this painting

The colour palette of this abstract painting is a frothy white with a swatch of dark and light blues, ranging from cobalt to hints of pale turquoise. Impressions of a traditional wooden-spoked ship’s wheel repeat on layers throughout the painting.

Strokes of black create a signature of sorts, followed by 11 short vertical lines counting off in a row across the bottom of the painting.

The original acrylic-on-paper contemporary abstract painting measures 9” x 12”.

Artists Connected By More Than Just An Exhibit

I am excited to announce my participation in an upcoming collaborative art exhibit. And there’s something special and unique about this group exhibit—more than just sharing gallery space.

The Colour Connection group art show is with fellow creative Canadian artists Alini Garcia, Tamara Grand, and Roman Rozumnyj. But it also features a truly collective artwork.

About The Colour Connection group art show

In addition to the art exhibit featuring individual artwork by each artist, there will be one collaborative painting in which we all take turns adding and removing marks and colours.

The painting started with me, then I mailed it to Tamara, who is based in Port Moody. After working on the painting, she mailed it to Roman in West Vancouver. When he finished his additions (and subtractions), he sent it to Alini in North Vancouver.

The final collaborative Colour Connection piece measures 20” x 20” and will be on exhibit at the show. Each of us shared our contributions on our respective Instagram pages (listed below) to follow the progress and process of this collaborative art piece.

The Colour Connection times & location

The art exhibit is in West Vancouver’s Millennium Park and runs for most of February and into March. 

There will be a welcoming and relaxed reception during gallery hours where visitors can meet the artists, view the work, enjoy some light refreshments, and mingle. There will also be an Artist Talk Livestream which anyone can watch on YouTube.

The gallery will present an artist talk live on its YouTube channel. Artists will get to talk about their work, inspirations, process & take questions from viewers. You can participate from anywhere, as it will be a Zoom meeting between us streamed on YouTube.The talk will then be available on the gallery’s YouTube channel.

Heart Opener by Deb Chaney (36” x 48” x 1.5”)

This post is to celebrate my continued partnership with Van Gogh Designs. I have 4 original pieces of abstract contemporary artwork featured in their beautiful showroom in White Rock, British Columbia. 

About these paintings

These original abstract paintings are on exhibit in the showroom, and the originals and prints are available for purchase.

The Writing Is In The Air - Gabriola is a watery blend of bluish-green, black, and white. This ink on canvas painting measures 40” x 30” x 0.5”.

Red Landscape has an earth-tone colour palette of umber, brownish-yellow, and a bit of grassy green. Layered in horizontal strips, the colours create a sense of depth as though looking across an autumn field beneath a sky of white and grey. The white outlines of a suspension bridge can be seen through the “fog”. It measures 48” x 36” x 1.5”.

Connection & Belonging has an earthy colour palette of light greens, yellows, and gold. Layers of sand give it texture while ruler-straight pencil lines connect numerous dots around the painting like a map, creating a sense of connection through cartography. This pencil-on-canvas painting measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

Heart Opener has a colour palette of striking pink under harsh layers of dark red bordered by deep purple and midnight blue. Bold and aggressive strokes and drips of bright white stand out against the painting’s dark foundation. This acrylic on canvas painting measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”.
