Can You Find a Dog Hidden in One of These Paintings?

Covid Creations ii of iii by Deb Chaney (8” x 10”)

I am thrilled to share that 3 of my abstract paintings have been sold – Covid Creations i, ii, and iii.

Therefore, I would like to extend a warm thank-you to Dave and Tonya in North Vancouver for collecting my original artwork and being such wonderful supporters of my career. I am so appreciative of your kindness this past summer.

About these paintings

These “little gem” paintings were created during the pandemic at Braid Street Studios in New Westminster.

The abstract artworks are a celebration of mixed media as gels, pastels, acrylics, and spray paint all interplay to create these unique and creativity-inspired landscapes that were my sanctuary during the quarantine period in 2020.

One thing that sets these apart from many of my Little Gems is that these paintings are on canvas rather than paper. Each of these paintings measures 8" x 10" x 1".

About my Little Gems Series

My ongoing Little Gems Series is a collection of paintings that begin as practice pieces. I use them to hone my skills as well as explore and try out new techniques and ideas.

Each painting in the series is bursting with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio. And all that energy and positivity is infused in every piece of artwork – which becomes my gift to you!

You can see more abstract paintings in the series here at Saatchi Art.

Look at What ElephantStock Did With My Art!

I Remember To Meditate by Deb Chaney

I’m excited to share that I have joined forces with ElephantStock online art gallery. They are now carrying reproductions of my artwork in various stunning wall art layouts and designs. These include canvas, multi-panel canvas, framed canvas, posters, and art prints.

A little bit about ElephantStock

The company is based in Texas and sells art worldwide, while all its products are made in the USA. All of the wall art they sell has been specifically curated by a small team passionate about decor and design.

Their user-friendly website lets you browse for art in a variety of ways. Naturally, you can look at what’s new and trending and selling the most. But what’s more interesting is that you can browse by subject, colours, rooms, styles, and more. And by artist, of course.

My onboarding process took place over several months earlier this year and started after I was approached by one of their representatives. We did an online interview with many questions that certainly piqued my interest.

My favourite question was: What do you do on a rainy day?

My answer was: I put on a rain jacket and boots and go for a beautiful walk in the rain. It’s one of my favourite things to do.

A few of my favourite things

The curator at ElephantStock chose many of my artworks to reproduce, and I love how they’ve gotten creative in the layout and made multi-panel paintings out of a single art piece. So I’d like to share my 3 favourite selections here.

I Remember to Meditate

This painting reminds me of the story Tara Brach shares in her Dharma Talks about learning the Buddha sangha and the metaphor behind embracing this imperfection.

AFX III

I love this painting because of the feeling of freedom and movement it creates. This was originally a small painting and, as I work on my new large-scale series, I aim to embody this flow and natural motion into my new works. This work inspires me to go to the studio and paint – and I love art like this that gets me back to painting again!

New Art II

I am so proud of this artwork and remember when I started painting this small series of paintings. I had just started cold-water ocean swimming year round, and I truly feel the water and the underwater world influenced the imagery, colours, and feel of these paintings.

My Thanks to the Collector of These 2 Paintings

Crossing Over i of ii by Deb Chaney (23” x 30”)

This post is to announce that 2 of my abstract paintings have been sold. I would like to extend a warm thank-you to Ms. Knowler of Burnaby, BC, Canada. I am deeply grateful for your becoming a collector of my original artwork and thank you for this.

About These Paintings

The complementary paintings are primarily composed of multiple layers of whites and greys.  On top of these are dark, rusty reds in thick, gestural strokes creating a sense of aggressive motion. Layers of faint black handwriting can be seen in the background.

The heavily layered and textured paintings both measure 23” x 30”.

These paintings are part of my Fragments of Life Series. I began the series in 2013 and continue to work on it and evolve it to this day.  Each painting is an echo of my own personal evolution and life journey.

Crossing Over iI of ii by Deb Chaney (23” x 30”)

About My Fragments of Life Series

I begin with a blank white sheet of roughly textured 23” x 30”  300-pound water colour paper, a palette knife, and some heavy body acrylic paint mixed with gel medium. And, most importantly, the compelling need to create.

When I begin I often don’t know what the painting is about. As the process evolves, I learn about the painting and myself. Each painting can be a culmination of up to 20-30 layers added and taken away, taking anywhere from a week to several months for a painting to reach completion.

During this time I am in a relationship with the art piece and I learn its meaning and significance, understanding what the painting has to teach me and show me. There is often contradiction and tension – fuel for the creative fire.

The blending and glazing of colours, the scratching and removing of paint to reveal under colours, the embedding of collage ephemera, the use of pencil and conte markings and scribblings all expressions of feelings of the beauty and the pain, the freedom and the frustration, the evolution and feelings of being stuck all encompassed in this journey of life.

These are the fragments of my life.

How to Get “Belindas Painting” at Bed Bath & Beyond

Belinda’s Painting by Deb Chaney (18” x 26”)

I’m excited to announce that a reproduction of my abstract artwork is now available at Bed Bath & Beyond. (Of course, this is the new online retailer, not the big box chain that shut down!)

About This Painting

When my daughter was little, we'd walk through giant stores like Bed Bath and Beyond, IKEA, and Pottery Barn. I would ask her to imagine with me and picture reproductions of my artwork hanging in the model rooms, available for purchase in these international stores.

Well, my friends, sometimes dreams do come true. I present to you a beautiful little painting I created while working at Braid Street Studios in New Westminster, BC before the pandemic.

During that period, I had a wonderful student coming to me for private lessons to learn abstract mixed-media painting. This painting was inspired by her – and titled Belindas Painting – then purchased by another artist-in-residence.

Now, it is really great to see it available here for others to enjoy as well!

The painting measures 18” x 26” x 1.5” and is a giclee canvas hand-stretched and stapled over North American pine-wood bars. It is inset mounted in an elegant 2”-thick hardwood frame to create a floating illusion.

New Original Artwork: BIWT ii

BIWT ii by Deb Chaney (48” x 24”)

This post is to announce that my new original abstract artwork is now available for purchase. You can find the original painting – as well as high-quality prints of BIWT ii in various sizes – available for purchase on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

When the quarantine kicked in during the COVID-19 pandemic, the only thing left for me to do was create. So I grabbed my stencils, acrylic paints, collage materials, and spray paint, and got to work.

The painting’s title — BIWT — stands for Because I Want To and reflects the only thing I wanted to do at the time. And that was to create art and express my thoughts and feelings the best way I knew how.

The painting’s colour palette consists of magenta, purple, and pink. Numbers and letters are stenciled with black spray paint over collaged layers of old, yellowed newspapers.

There is a lot of motion and energy in this painting. Aggressive strokes are scribbled and scrawled in the layers of paint, giving a sense of edginess and creating depth and texture. The gestural strokes and spray paint give a graffiti look to the painting.

This mixed media on canvas painting measures 24” x 48” x 0.5”.

This painting is the second piece in a new series of abstract artwork. The original of the first painting in the series is still available for purchase and can be seen here: https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-BIWT-i/499285/8168468/view

See My "Fallen Angel" In the New Issue of Beyond Words

Fallen Angel by Deb Chaney (23” x 30”)

In case you missed my posts in August and last month in October, I’ve been featured on the cover and in the pages of Beyond Words Literary Magzine. And I’m happy to announce that my artwork is once again in the magazine. My abstract painting, Fallen Angel, is in the November issue, which is now available.

An international magazine dedicated to unique and emerging literary and visual artists, Beyond Words carefully curates visual artworks and literary pieces for its monthly issues. It is available in both print and digital.

About this Painting

Sometimes we get help just when we need it. And sometimes it comes in the form of a person offering exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.

We experience so much grace and deep appreciation for their kindness, love, and support. And because of this, at the time, such people can feel to us like angels. This is what inspired the painting and its title, Fallen Angel.

The painting is full of earth tones with many shades of brown, red, blue, and beige. The heavily layered and textured painting has a large heart shape over most of the canvas, which measures 23” x 30”.

About My Fragments of Life Series

This painting is part of my Fragments of Life Series of abstract paintings, which began in 2013 and continues to evolve today. Each of these paintings is an echo of my own personal evolution and life journey.

I begin with a blank white sheet of roughly textured 23” x 30”  300-pound water colour paper, a palette knife, and some heavy body acrylic paint mixed with gel medium. And, most importantly, the compelling need to create.

All You Need to Know About The Alchemists Art Show

Can The Process of Alchemy be Beautiful? by Deb Chaney (36” x 36”)

This post is to announce that my artwork is part of a group exhibit that launches this week and runs right up until just before Christmas. The Alchemists Group Exhibit opens tomorrow (November 8th) and is being held at The Artful Gallery in Courtenay, British Columbia.

About My Painting

The abstract painting I have in the art exhibit is titled Can The Process of Alchemy be Beautiful? It measures 36" x 36" and is mixed media on wood panel.

The heavily textured painting is a mix of blues and gold with sacred geometry repeated across the canvas with stencils of the Flower of Life.

About The Alchemists Group Exhibit

What is alchemy?

Rooted in the Arabian al-kimia (stone preparation) and Greek chemeia (metal pouring), alchemy is considered the origin of modern chemistry. Medieval alchemists sought to turn metals into gold and concoct an elixir for eternal youth, giving them a reputation for magic and the occult.

But modern alchemy is more about transformation and creation in artistic, philosophical, spiritual, or psychological terms. The quest for spiritual enlightenment, harmony, and self-awareness by liberating oneself from beliefs, opinions, traumas, and fears. In this sense, it is a metaphor for a spiritual or psychological rebirth. As you may know, this is a large component of my artwork, so this art show feels very fitting.

Here are all of the essential details about the show:

Exhibit open: Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 12 pm to 5 pm

Artists’ reception: Friday, November 10, from 7 pm to 9 pm

Exhibit hours: Wednesday to Saturday, 12 pm to 5 pm (regular gallery hours)

Exhibit end date: Saturday, December 23.

The Background Behind My New Painting "The Wild Ride Of Life"

The Wild Ride of Life by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

This post is to announce that my new original abstract artwork, The Wild Ride of Life, is available for sale. You can also purchase high-quality prints of the painting in a variety of sizes on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This painting was created during those long days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During that time I was painting in a large warehouse complex of art studios. Unsurprisingly, the place was mostly vacated a lot of the time. And it was during that time that I basically went on my own personal rampage of creativity.

The Wild Ride of Life is one of the paintings that I produced during those days in my warehouse studio.

The painting’s colour palette consists of dark reds and blues contrasted with bright white and yellows and earth tones. The composition is an edgy and rough landscape that, although abstract, lends itself to a cityscape. At the same time, drips of paint travel up and down across the canvas, evoking the rollercoaster of the human experience.

The Wild Ride of Life is a mixed media on canvas painting measuring 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

New Original Artwork: Book Cover i

Book Cover i by Deb chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to announce that there are now prints available of my new original abstract artwork. High-quality prints of Book Cover i can now be purchased in a variety of sizes on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This part of a pair of Little Gems paintings that were created for a book I am in the process of writing. The book is about reclaiming my authentic creativity and what that really means for me and my artistic practice.

The 2 paintings were ideas I was playing around with for the cover. However, I have since chosen some different artwork – not these two! – for the cover of the book. But these 2 abstract paintings are nevertheless still beautiful and they have a flow and ethereal quality that I love!

Blending purples and blues with luminous areas of white creates a sense of clouds and oceans. A light, airy sense of floating is paired with fluid, wavy movements. While gritty layers of sand give it an earthy texture.

The mixed media painting measures 9” x 12” and is acrylic on paper.

My Abstract Artwork is Featured in Beyond Words Magazine

Tanlged Heart by Deb Chaney (23” x 30” x 1.5”)

Just back in August, I announced in a blog post that my abstract painting had been selected as the cover art for the September issue of Beyond Words Magzine. So I am thrilled to say that my artwork is once again featured in the magazine this month.

Beyond Words is an international monthly arts magazine with carefully curated visual artworks and literary pieces by unique and emerging creative talents. My latest contribution is on page 10 of Issue #40, published in October 2023.

Tangled Heart paired with a Poem by Dick Altman in Beyond Words #40

About This Painting

The original Tangled Heart painting is an acrylic mixed media collage on 300-pound cold press watercolour paper mounted on wood panel. It measures 23” x 30” x 1.5”.

Bold strokes of deep blues, yellows, grays, and black circle around and converge to create a harmonious yet dynamic composition. The play of light and shadow adds a palpable sense of depth and dimension, while scratches and crumpled creases create a sense of tension. It's like capturing a moment of chaos and harmony simultaneously, much like the complexities of life itself.

This painting is part of my Fragments of Life Series.  The series of abstract paintings is about how we often morph and fragment ourselves to survive the challenges and trauma we experienced growing up. We become people we are not – and do what we have to – in order to meet our needs. And the series is a healing journey about reclaiming those lost parts of ourselves, our fragments.

Each painting in the series represents a lesson from my spiritual journey. The painting process always helps me stay in the present moment – keeping with what’s real – and embracing, accepting, and loving it. We do this with the knowledge that we have the power and capacity to transform into the next version of ourselves.

New Original Artwork “Where (Forest and Beach) Become One”

Where (Forest and Beach) Become One by Deb Chaney (36” x 30’)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new abstract artwork. My original painting Where (Forest and Beach) Become One is now available for sale on Saatchi Art. The original painting is still available to collectors and you can also purchase high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

Before my (grown-up) daughter went travelling, she was living with me here on our beautiful little island, in the forest close to the ocean. We often shared these moments when what we needed most was – to just get out of the house! And this painting was inspired by one of our many on-island mini adventures.

One night we went to a beach that we adore and to get there we had to walk through the rainforest. It was dark outside and a million stars were shining down between the towering silhouettes of the trees. We stood on the beach, looking up through the treetops, and the place felt as though the ocean and the forest were becoming one.

This piece is designed to invite the viewer's imagination on a journey into nature. The abstract painting evokes a sense of landscape using a mix of earthy tones such as greens, blues, and browns, with hints of warm yellows and oranges.

The composition invites you to explore and contemplate the merging of these 2 distinct environments and encourages a sense of connection with the natural world – and the harmony to be found within.

My Upcoming Workshop on the FUNdamentals of Abstract Painting

See How Spirit Moves Her by Deb Chaney (12” x 9”)

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be offering an in-person workshop beginning next month. It was written up in my newsletter this month, but I’d like to mention it here as well. If you don’t receive my newsletter, you can sign up for it here.

About FUNdamentals in Abstract Painting With Acrylics

My FUNdamentals workshop will be held on Gabriola Island on Monday nights, starting in October, and will run until December.

The 8-week course teaches the foundational 3 Cs of non-representation art making, how to use a colour wheel for basic colour mixing, and how to clarify the meaning in your work.

We explore mark-making principles and practice hands-on painting to learn layering, etching, and removal techniques. On top of these, we delve into how to add depth, texture, and intrigue to your artwork.

Finally, we discover the 3 Wows – what makes a great abstract painting and how to know when your painting is finished. You will leave this course inspired to continue your artistic journey, full of ideas and principles to explore and implement.

Dates: Mondays, Oct 16 to Dec 4 (8 weeks)
Time: 6:30-8 pm
Where: Gabriola Recreation Office, Gabriola Island
Registration: https://www.gabriolarecreation.org/events/painting-with-acrylics-fall2023/

For those of you who are unable to attend the workshop in person, it will be accessible online in the future. When it becomes available, you’ll be able to find it on the Online Streaming Workshops page.

Mail Art Exhibition and Fundraiser at the Richmond Art Gallery

Aaa by Deb Chaney (5” x 7”)

I’m excited to announce that a few pieces of my abstract artwork will be displayed in Richmond,  B.C. beginning this week. They were created for a mail art exhibit at Metro Vancouver’s Richmond Art Gallery (RAG). The art show, Collecting & Reassembling, was organized in tandem with and accompanies the Classification Crisis exhibit by award-winning Yukon-based artist and poet Sonja Ahlers.

Mail art – also called postal and correspondence art – is an artistic movement focused on sharing small artworks through the postal service. In keeping with this, artists from around the world contributed postcard-size works of art for the exhibition.

Based on the principles of equal, one-to-one collaboration between artists, mail art has become a worldwide cultural movement for artists to share visual art, poetry, or any other artistic form through the postal system.

Richmond Art Gallery

The open call to artists for this exhibit was inspired by the zines, chapbooks, collages, and mixed media works of Sonja Ahlers. Artists responded with their own stories, images, and ephemera into postcard-sized artworks which were then mailed to the Richmond Art Gallery.

The exhibit is coordinated by local artist and RAG Public Program Coordinator, Kathy Tycholis. As it’s also a fundraiser, there will be a live auction a couple of weeks after the show has concluded.

Collecting & Reassembling: International Mail Art Exhibition And Fundraiser

Exhibit: September 9th – November 5, 2023

Live Auction: November 18, 2023

About These Paintings

These 3 small postcard-size artworks were created specifically for the International Mail Art Exhibition. The theme of the show – and hence the theme driving their creation – is the idea of collecting and reassembling.

With this in mind, I collected materials already in my studio – such as stained papers, vinyl, and glitter letters. I played around with them, using gel medium and acrylic paint to adhere them to the paper canvas and bring the pieces together.

The colours of all 3 abstract paintings are bright blues, greens, and gold, as well as white and black. They have collaged cutout letters as well as handwritten words in cursive. Each small painting is 5” x 7” mixed media on paper.

UPDATE. November 2023

An update from the International Mail Art Exhibition and Fundraiser from the Richmond Art Gallery.

First of all, thank you for your generosity.  Our online auction raised over $1900 ! It was a busy, fun-filled night and we are just getting the final packages of purchased Mail Art in the post to their new homes.

With almost 300 artists in this exhibition it was a LOT for people to view and to choose from, so we are not surprised that not everything sold.

However, we have decided to keep the remaining artworks up in our gallery and online for an additional auction, in the hopes that all the artworks find a good home.

We now have 130 artists still represented online and in the Richmond Art Gallery, and they will be hosted at an online auction until the evening of December 31, 2023. Please have a look at our online auction, and share it with friends. All works start at $5.00 CDN and go up in small increments, so this has proven a really affordable way to start collecting some art!

The new auction site is here: https://app.charityauctionstoday.com/auctions/raga-mail-art-auction-part-2-40355

And if you want to see the entire show, it is online here: https://app.charityauctionstoday.com/auctions/RAGA-Mail-Art-Exhibition-Fundraiser-38022

My Artwork is on the Cover of a Magazine

September Cover of Beyond Words featuring Keep It Real by Deb Chaney

I am thrilled to share that my abstract painting Keep It Real was selected as the covert art for the September issue of Beyond Words Magzine.

Based in Germany, but published in English, Beyond Words is an international magazine of literature and art. They feature carefully selected visual artworks (such as wonderful cover art!) and literary pieces and offer a stage for unique creatives and emerging talents. The magazine is published monthly in both print and digital formats.

About This Painting

You may recognize Keep It Real from a blog post last summer when it was featured in the Free Spirit Art Gallery here on Gabriola Island.

The painting is part of my Fragments of Life series of abstract paintings. The series is about how we tend to morph and fragment ourselves as a means to survive the challenges and trauma we experienced growing up. We become different people, doing what we have to in order to meet our needs.

The series is a healing journey about reclaiming those lost parts of ourselves – our fragments.

Each painting in the series represents a lesson from my spiritual journey. The painting process always helps me stay in the present moment – keeping with what’s real – and embracing, accepting, and loving it. We do this with the knowledge that we have the power and capacity to transform into the next version of ourselves.

The painting is an acrylic mixed media collage on 300-pound cold press watercolour paper mounted on wood panel, measuring 23” x 30” x 1.5”.

Original Artwork “(Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life” Sold

(Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life by Deb Chaney

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original artwork, (Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life. First and foremost, I would like to thank the art collector for choosing to add this abstract painting to their private collection. You are deeply appreciated and I am so grateful for your patronage.

Secondly, I would like to thank Free Spirit Gallery here on Gabriola Island for facilitating the sale of this artwork.

About This Painting

This painting is a mixed media abstract painting on paper using acrylics, ink, and elements of collage with printed text and paper. With a dynamic and vibrant composition full of motion and energy, the many layers and textures add depth and complexity to the piece.

The colour palette consists of bold hues such as deep blues and dark greens. These contrast with warm yellows, fiery oranges, and bright swaths of white. The colors blend and interact with each other, forming an organic and harmonious composition that invites exploration and contemplation.

Bold brushstrokes reveal a sense of spontaneity and intuition. Swirling lines, drips, and gestural movements add to the painting’s sense of movement and energy.

This little painting is part of my Little Gems Series, which I use for testing new techniques and practicing old ones. While the original has been sold, prints in a variety of sizes and canvases are available through Saatchi Art online.

About This Painting

My mixed media abstract painting featured in this exhibit, Emerald Lake, is a blend of purples, blues, and white, layered on top of each other creating a sense of depth and texture. The artwork was created using acrylic paint on paper, with layers of sand for texture, and a small bit of collaging done with printed book pages.

The painting is part of my Little Gems series, which I use for testing out new techniques and practicing old ones. The passion and love for art that I feel in the studio is expressed in every piece of art I create, regardless of size. All of this energy is passed on through the canvas as my gift to you.

The original painting was sold to Ms. E. Mottahead in Paris, France. While the original is no longer available, please see below for information on how you can obtain prints and reproductions for your collection.
